Hi There please help me
After connecting my ELM 327 obd II scanner and reading the codes the car would not start or crank. It only does some tickling. when I turn the key I just hear something like tik tik tik...

I was using Scanmaster elm 2 and scan tool.net 1.13

Please help me what should I do I really frustrated.

Mine is 1999 E46 318i and it has 20 pin OBD connector

I should say even now scanner can connect to ECU and read codes.

Please Help me I don't know what to do I cannot move the car and the nearest dealer is 40 to 50 Kilometer away.

Your battery is empty, thats why your starter is only ticking!

Ok Let me test the battery with Multimeter however my battery was fine before starting scan procedure

Do you mean that 10 minute testing has emptied my battery?

Tested with multimeter
On Disconnected Battery I can read exactly 11.95 Volts
Can anyone please confirm if it is battery or not ?

Why don?t you just load your battery, or connect with another car, you will see it will start normally!

i have a e38
one day i came to start and all i got was a click click click noise

turned out my ecu had gone down

i orderd a new ecu , ews and chip out the key from my breakers yard for my model and bobs your uncle all was well
ecu ,ews and chip cost me 55?

so even in worse case u need a new ecu not an expensive fix
but what ever you do dont take to main dealer they will quote you 3 to ?400 plus labour

the ecu is under the bonnet and ews will be under steering wheel or glovebox in mycase , swop chip out key and job done

but fingers crossed you can solve before having to go though that (was very easy 2 repair tho)

I hope it is not ECU
Mine has been loaded with Japanese version , definitely can not find proper ECU for it.

Also dealers are really cheap there, here in Japan an ECU from dealer costs more than 1500US$. Don't have any idea about EWS and key programming

something that is important is, I can connect to her with ELM 327 OBD II scanner
could you read codes when your ECU had been broken down

the ews picks up and identifies the signal from the chip in key verifies thats your key that in turn tells the ecu its safe to start and crank the engine

the ews , ecu and key chip are paired
to replace one means replace all unless your capable of flashing the ecu with your original key and ews code

ELM327 will not work with 1999 BMW unless it is from US.
ELM327 is ONLY for OBD2-compartible cars...

What do you mean by not working? Do you mean it will damage this type of cars or it can not connect.
I can read the codes and have some codes now (not related to this problem some codes about my cooling system)
Even I also cleared some codes
Scanmaster pro also can connect to it without any problem
My car is BMW E46 318i with M43 engine I think this car is only available in Japan and Europ.

Did you test ELM327 with this car? Thanks

11.95 volts = flat battery! You should have a minimum of 12.5 volts.

Battery voltage is very important these days especially on heavily loaded cars like mercedes & jaguar, and can set a number of dummy fault codes. we have found the best way
is to check the voltage drop while cranking
approx 13.5 v running
12.5 v static
9.2 v min cranking
incidently the ELM 327 can do much more than obd2 with
the right software. i am currently working on a mercedes
program ( pre can ) that can do engine / transmission /
A B S / electronic selector / some other modules.
access to other obd pins being a problem

Looking forward to hearing more about that really interested to that device

About battery I should say I think I need new one mine has 13.6 V at engine running at it drops to 13.4 with lights on. I will buy new one soon and report correct voltages here

About ELM 327
I was using cheap clone ELM327 and found out it is really amusing device
However the codes that Scanmaster ELM 2.0 shows are completely different than codes that scantool.net shows
maybe I need to install other soft-wares or change my battery to recheck it. I also will write new thread and will describe my experiences with ELM 327 and related softwares as soon as I get my battery

Also Test the ELM327 Again, the reason it was working then stop is because the ELM 327 Takes the power from the car battery to make it work, anyway good to hear your problem is solved
