View Full Version : ECU Punto 1.2 cant turn off EM light!

OK so I purchase a fiat punt 1.2 8v 2001 reg and it had the engine management light on and a head gasket issue.
I fixed/changed the H.G and the car starts and runs.
As for the E.M light I took it to a garage who hooked it up and they said theirs a few codes, one is for the coil pack and the other states on their machine that only the manufacturer can turn this off!
I have changed the coil packs and all seems to run fine but I need to turn the E.M light off; are they correctly advising me in saying that 'only the manufacturer can turn off the EM light due to a specific fault'.
I have recently purchased but not received an elm327 diy job to try my self but surely the garage had better equipment which makes me doubtful.
After research I have an incline that it could be an ECU issue. If this turns out to be correct is their a device I can buy that I can sort the ECU out myself.
Many thanks in advance...

a good ecu reader/scanner will turn it off m8 ,,

i had a similar problem with a fiat sceicento.....the difference was that my MIL was blinking......the ecu had no trouble codes.....(i scanned with FIAT ECU SCAN).....i went to the FIAT DEALER and they told me that it wants self adaptation.....they did it but again the same thing.......finally they told me that it was the ecu....and i leave like it is but without any problem

If fault codes cannot be erased probably you are having problem with your cars ecu.
Many punto ecus are having problems with the coil signals.

try reflashing the ECU. that should fix it

What are the exact codes? (with number)
If the vehicle follows the law (EOBD rules) you should be able to turn off almost every fault (after they have been repaired). The one exception is the learning for the Phonic Wheel.

You should be turn off with diagnostic tool and fault code clear. If fault stay again you have permanent error on engine (sensor, fault part ...) Which code number?

if you have 0 errors then you have to warm your car to working temperature. give gas pedal 3 times, maximum rpm. the mil turns off it self.

I have seen this be for but only when new ecu fitted, seem,s to be some learnig sequence of new ecu but by the sounds of it is not your case but you have nowt to lose.
Thanks kev

Yes, that's the Phonic Wheel relearn procedure.
Wait until cooling fan has come in twice, then rev it to above 5000 rpm. Suggest to rev it to at least 5500 rpm.

It also happens if you reset self adaptations by a diagnostic tool and yes mil goes off if you rev above 5000 rpm for three times

When ever you fit a new head gasket on Fiat Punto the MIL light will come on, I do not know the course, but it?s very easy to switch the light off, if you have got the radio code then you just disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then connect the battery back job done.

Thanks all for your trouble shooting...
I have used the elm327 with fiat scan and the error was pointing to coil pack b low signal but its a new coil pack and I swapped them round so still not coil pack.
Anyway from alot of research it seems 99% that the ecu has gone down so I am now needing to get that sorted.

Faulty coil pack signals in this ecus is a very common thing. If you change ecu it is beter to change coils too.
