Hi guys,

My star decided to call it quits today.
Green light on, but when connected to the laptop, Virtual machine freezes and becomes inoperative. If i disconnect the serial cable from either side, VM comes back immediately. If i disconnect car cable, it unfreezes for a second and freezes back up.
Has anyone managed to repair one of these units yet? It's a clone but has been working for over a year. I use laptop with true serial. Second laptop same story.
Serial cable tested, all good.

Any feedback is highly appreciated.

Toni

Few issues:
probably have operating system issue,
or maybe your VM file is damaged,
or if you are using external disk maybe bad sectors,
or if you are using external disk, USB cable defective?

I have a back up of the VM file, and tried already, but no success.
I haven't tried another HDD, but will do so, and will post results.

Yep, another HDD and problem is the same.

What do you get from the CAESAR test? Can you test your multiplexer with another laptop with native Windows/Star installation?

toniz

I can not do a proper Caesar test, as the VM freezes once the MUX is connected.
If i play with the Com port settings, it sometimes unfreezes, but then i get error 102 - Com port initialization error at Caeasar. If i unplug car cable the VM unfreezes for a second, if i do test in that second i get 104 Download not possible. And with Mux disconnected, i get com port OK, but No hardware detected.
Like i said , it's been working all along, i have a back up of the VM file, from day one.
I don't have laptop with native installation, but it clearly looks like the Mux has a problem on the serial port. Tried re soldering the board, but no change.

I can not do a proper Caesar test, as the VM freezes once the MUX is connected.

I missed this point, strange how the serial communication issue can freeze the computer completely. Would be interesting to see what happens with a non-VM setup.

A pity that instructions to fix typical multiplexer issues are rare. After all, broken multiplexers are not that rare, specifically those cheaper ones. I've seen several posts referring to the "104 D2Download not possible" fault.

Did borrow another MUX today (original one, supplied by Actia), used my cables, no freezing but i do get error 9551 , and Caesar - 104 download not possible.

I wonder if i can make it work, i have a car to finish urgently.

Alternatively, i do have Xentry 01.2011, i can attempt to do native install.
How difficult is this? Does it require any keys, etc.?
Should the original MUX work with this?

How did you conclude it was an original Actia mux? If it reads like that on the label, it could still be a clone. What I'm after is that your cable might not be compatible with that mux.

If you had another mux for testing, why did you not test your mux (and cables) with the computer that came with this mux?

Assuming your VM backup copy is good and you had at least one good mux with correct cables, it does sound like your COM port settings are still not correct. Could you have a look at the host computer COM port settings as well as the VM COM port settings and report?

I know that they have it on lease from the local dealer.
Also, it is using round rs485 on both ends of the PC cable.
And did not want to try my mux on their station to avoid any possible damage.
Anyway, in the process of doing a fresh 01.2011 installation, and will post results.

Thanks

Round box with label RS485 is fake, there is nothing inside, just cable pass thru. :-)
Opened more than 5 of this, all is empty, but cable is on both sides of box sometimes cause problems

I've seen square boxes that are empty inside, the same box that on a good mux has a converter inside.

But I believe toniz was referring to the round connector at each end of the cable, the one the genuine diagnosis computer is using (thus no RS232 converter needed). Even this mainly proves that the laptop is genuine but it would be unlikely that one would use a clone with a genuine laptop, I assume.

I`ve repaired some multiplexers; for proper diagnose You should connect ceasar to laptop without VMware and run ceasar test; cloned multiplexers that I saw had rs232 &rs485 integrated circuits inside black square box; post here attatchment with your test; I hope it helps in diagnose;

Got my new Mux today, and all good and working with the old hard and VM file.
I guess the old mux just died.
Now i just need to figure out, how to get it working on native 01.2011 installation.

I tried the old Mux, caeser test from the laptop (no VM), but always get - Device not in state ready, or no device selected. With the new one Caeser test goes all OK.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Still would be nice yo repair the old unit.

Hello to all members of this great forum, i have a big problem with my mux!
It works any more.:banghead:
I have make Ceasar test and upload it to this thread.
I have a second mux and it works fine with the same cables, so i think the cables are ok.
If anybody know how to repair it, or have a step by step guide for mux repair, it was great if you help me to repair my mux. I know that my mux is not the best quality because it was very cheap.

Many thanks for your help!
best regards Cheng

Greetings to all members here- all the best in the new year,

I have a genuine Mercedes multiplexer Part D3, who worked with Compact 4 PC (touch screen IS BROKEN NOW and some components on main board is burned out, repair is too expencive) multiplexer is still valid and work fine, but I need the connection cable that will connect the classic PC through COM port RS-232 (i have IBM T 30, with com port). I bought the cable through e-Bay, but he is wearing a black box on which was written 232-485, with this cable can not be connected to the star 2000 multiplexer with computer! this is cable for C3 mux and this hawe difrent wiring sheme! , whether someone has a wiring diagram for this star 2000 cable without black box ? , the connectors are the same, with one side connects to the RS 232 and the other on the multiplexer,

thanks in advance for your help

Did you check what is inside the black box with the label "RS232 - RS485"? If it is empty, you need another cable, one which comes with high quality multiplexers (if you were my neighbour, I would sell you the spare one I have).

If the cable seems to have a real RS485 converter, either the cable or the mux or your laptop serial port is broken. IBM T30 laptops sometimes have issues with the serial port. It would be useful to check the laptop with another multiplexer set that is known to work from a serial port.

I guess the mux is unlikely broken if it was working fine until your tablet got broken.

hello,

i have the same mux and is broken.
those resistors from 100 and 102, does anybody know the value of these.

i desoldered them and the one with 100 gives me 10 ohm
the one with 102 gives me 1000 ohm.

is this correct ?

100 it`s 10*10^0=10 ohm, 102 it`s 10*10^2=1000 ohm or 1 kohm.

hello DK members.
I also have a dead MUX, this one is a clone china type.
It works fine with 38 pin cars, but not with OBDII.
DK member Hurtman helped me to find the problem. Thanks for that mate.
here is the caesar test I did.

D2 ADC ... 2500 Error ADC ( I read that this caused by a bad MAX192BCWP)
Here is my dilemma:

a) I am not sure which are the CAN chips..i am guessing that the AN82527 are the ones that need to be replaced, since they are the only ones that are SERIAL COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK PROTOCOL chips found on the board. ( image 1)
b) I did found the MAX192BCWP)
c) main question is, which ones should I replace first? the CAN chips or the MAX192BCWP, or should I change all of them?
Any ideas are very welcome.
Cheers.

HI again !

I found the sheme to conect diretely to the pcb of the C3 !
Only 8 wires use in COM port pins 2-9, pin 1 is not use, and pin 9 must be conected with pin 4.
Pinout of 10 pin for round cable:
1 - GND (to pin 5 COM)
2 - Vcc to adapter
3 - Tx+
4 - Tx-
5 - Rx+
6 - Rx-
7 - to pin 6 COM (DSR)
8 - to pin 7 COM (RTS)
9 - to pin 8 COM (CTS)
10 - to pins 4,9 COM (DTR,RI)

Do not use pin 2 (Vcc), find wire to pin 14 U107 and conect to pin 2 COM (RX),
find wire to pin 13 U107 and conect to pin 3 COM (TX)

Hello everybody,

I recently purchased a c3 off ebay, (the one made by actia - original one i believe). it was without the cables which i purchased separately. I read up on threads downloaded the 9.2014 software and installed it and ran it on a dell e5500, (after installing win xp) which has a native serial port configuring the ports as suggested. (com2, 115000 bitrate). Connected the mux with the cables i purchased, one obd ii and one rs232 with the box in the middle (it isnt empty - i checked) of the cable. Problem is as soon as i go into das the mux disconnects. I applied all the patches and the blacklist fixes (even manually) but cannot connect to the vehicle.

i ran a caesar test and here are the results:

Testresult for Part D:

I changed the bin files to the d2,d,and t as well as the calfix872 for d2,d,and t. Changed com port from 1 to 2 in bios, no change either. Changed baud rates no connection too. With the d2 configuration it proceeds one screen after it disconnects, saying i should manually choose the data. All it reads is voltage. I proceed and it cannot read any units. With the T configuration it doesnt disconnect but the unlock icon changes to locked, and then an error appears. (applied also the blacklist patch for the 9/2014 installation).

Any help please?

Hello, maybe it will be helpful for someone. I had a error (1.3)-3.515.2005 and i could not connect to any modules in my car W203. The DAS showed only the battery voltage and the serial number of ESP module. I found broken relay in my mux C3 (I attach a picture). Now after change to new everything works good without ESP module (shows the same error). Maybe someone known which relays are responibility about ESP communication?

Here similar problem with SD Connect C4. Older cars like 2000-2003 doesnt work. I get stuck at the screen where it says turn on ignition. Any ideas for this error?

Does anyone have the pinout from the MAX202CWE to the 19 pin round connector? I'm trying to diagnose this chip to see if that is the reason why this old Part D mux is not communicating with the laptop.

Thank you.
