Carprog Mcu Reflash Step by step

Here is how to reflash CARPROG Mcu AT91SAM7S256 step by step, first of all I wish to thanks to lupu_sandu, elchip, autocargo, Tachonow, carradio2001 and all DK forum members who made this possible.
I bought my Carprog clone 4.01 from digi_obd but after about 50 uses starts a counter: "260 uses left - update hardware to synchronize" and was decreasing, anyway 260 uses is big number to recover the investment (us $209 dlls), the programmer was paid before the counter starts.

Ok, first we need this stuff:

1.- AT91SAM7S256 bin:

We need to prepare the Carprog to connect to Jtag programmer but first the flash need to be erased, the Jtag function in mcu is dissabled, you can't connect to the mcu before erase the flash. Remove the AT88SC eeprom from the board, please note where is the pin 1 in eeprom before remove:

Carefully lift the pin 55 (reset) of the mcu and solder a wire and secure it with a small ammount of silicone (you don't want to broke the pin in the process).
Connect the Carprog (with the pin 55 dissconected) to the 12v supply, wait about 10 seconds and connect the wire from pin 55 to Vcc (3.3V) in Carprog:

Wait from 5 to 10 seconds after connect the 12v supply, the flash content will be erased and the Jtag option of the Mcu will be enabled now. If not work leave connected for about 3 to 5 minutes. Disconnect the 12v supply from carprog and remove the pin 55 wire from vcc. The pin 55 must remain disconnected until the programming process is done.

Install the H-JTAG software in your pc.

After the H-Jtag sotware is installed we can procced to configure:

Open the H-Jtag server and make the adjustments:

Now connect the carprog to JTag programmer and 12v supply and press "Detect Target" in H-TAG server, now the Carprog Mcu is detected!!!:

Now we procced to program the AT91 mcu:

Start the H-FLASHER and select the AT91SAM7S256 from the list:

-Go to "4 Programming" in the programming wizzard and press "Check" to verify the communication with the target mcu, if all is ok the values must be:
Flash: AT91SAM7S256 0x270D0940
Target: ARM7TDMI LITTLE-ENDIAN
-In "Type" select: "Plain Binary Format"
-In "Dst Addr" select: "Flash Base Address"
-In "Src File" select the location of the AT91SAM7S256 bin in your hard drive.:

Now press the "Program" button and wait to finish:

If the progrmming was succefull you will receive the next message:

You can verify again if everything is ok by pressing the button "Verify":

The programming process is finished!!, disconnect the 12v supply, then disconnect the programmer from carprog, solder the pin 55 wire to Ground (check the picture) and put back the AT88SC eeprom, reassemble the carprog and test it.

I already made some further tests and the Carprog works well with any version of the software and the COUNTER IS GONE!!!
Tested with versions: 3.75, 4.0, 4.1, 4.5, 4.85 and 4.86, the counter never start again.

I made a modification to my Carprog clone for fast reprogramming, if I need to do it again will not be necessary to open it again and redo all connection every time I want or need to reprogram:

I used the Carprog pins from 15 to 21, those pins are useless for the programmer or any adapter, they are disconnected:

I used a "selector" like the desktop's pc for bios, to select the programming mode, in picture from left to right: 1, 2 3, if the jumper is placed at pins 1 and 2, the pin 55 (reset) from the AT91 is shorted to ground, preventing deprogramming or programming the MCU, if the jumper is placed at pins 2 and 3 the pin 55 is shorted to vcc 3.3v and the Mcu is placed in ERASE MODE. Without jumper the mcu is placed in programming mode:

Now is probably a waste of time, in the near future will save me some time but from now I can reflash the AT91 in less than 5 minutes. :)

Update: I forgot to mention that I doesn't need to remove the AT88SC eeprom to ERASE/REFLASH the AT91 mcu. After that the Carprog works well. This is MY OWN experience, so, If you want to do the same, do it at YOUR OWN risk.

I have two Carprog clone units, so, I take the risk and make all the reflash procedure without removing the AT88SC eeprom and the results are the same: the carprog unit works well after reflashing, the contents in AT88SC eeproms remains intact. I already make some tests with airbag modules, eerpom reading, some dashboards and mcu's and everything is ok.

You cannot ! The re-flash of the ARM mcu will make to not work your genuine. For enable all functions need eeprom AT88SC content, ARM eeprom content and LIB file.

at 93$ its worth it for the leads. I know they could be better quality but it takes time to make them yourself.

You may have the original without all the options activated but rarley require the none activated options so just put up with the clone for those, plus have a spare unit.

It's a known problem on Win98. I don't know is there a solution.
You'll have to use WinXP.

Yesterday I tried to use my carprog clone but doesn't work, the serial number was changed to "yyyyyyyyyyyyyy". I think this happen for use the software version 5.05, before using this software everything was ok, after a few uses the serial number changes to "yyyyyyyyyyyy". I can make it work again reflashing the ARM, now all is ok.

I doesn't update my hardware, only use a few times the Carprog v5.05 and suddenly the serial was changed to "yyyyyyyyyyyyyyy". After reflashing my carprog clone works well.

You need to follow the steps correctly, you don't need any drivers to reflash the carprog because you will not use the usb connector, you only need to use the HTAG connections inside the carprog. What programmer are you using to reflash? You need to be more specific to get help, if it's possible take a snapshoots.

try the pinout fron inside the jtag unit mine was a cheap chinese effort pin 1 on the ribbon was in the wrong side (red line was reversed
make sure the pins stated from the jtag interface are correct first !

Hi dear friends! I re flash my clone carprog as directed, and he now works well.I tested with an adapter for HV test and everything is working correctly.

A friend lot better at debugging with ida said the eeprom can be removed from the atmel with a little work (and serial changed so updates work). Nice to read vag ecus via obd2. Also couple of actia flashes are going around some run 2011 fine some are incomplete. They can have the serials changed or in software bad serials removed.

I put hand on it and resolve this in the best way!.

So the problem is I bay a CLONE-FROM-CLONE-FROM-CLONE!!! With vary bad pcb layer
On the micro and in all pcb.
First to resolve my pin 8 problem whose the missing line on button pcb side and the hole whose not connected!
Restore all and pin 8 whose GONE GONE.
Second not read MCU Motorola or I2C or 95...., change all 74HC125D to 74HCT125M put a new cristal and condensators
And all missing resistors on my pictures and make the new connection on the power socket so that I have more space to close the carprog housing without bending the pcb.

And in the last modification is that isolate type! Is necessary IMPORTANT!, carprog have a separate GND and when put
The PCB back in the housing sometimes have problems in read some MCU or eeproms!
So I find out that the pcb in one side from the regulators make connection to the housing and make in
The same time short to the another side from the PCB!

Final Result
Without put double 74HC125M (8x) to read I2C or 95 or MCU without or with external power

My carprog read all without external power.

Good to know more from you too. I think my instrument should be not so bad to read them (HP 973A DDM). And I also did a visual check by a magnifier, each of the three is with different apperance and slightly different in thickness. I think the right SMD should be around 100 pF. These are low quality ceramic chips without coding.

The left one of 100nF is no problem, functioning of bypassing

Middle and right, by looking roughly, are working together with the two IC's. So if the value not known I think the IC's datasheet may help in some of the way.

I have two Carprog clone units, so, I take the risk and make all the reflash procedure without removing the AT88SC eeprom and the results are the same: the carprog unit works well after reflashing, the contents in AT88SC eeproms remains intact. I already make some tests with airbag modules, eerpom reading, some dashboards and mcu's and everything is ok.
I flash my in that way and now my eeprom is erased

You'll need to erase the Atmel correctly, if you don't erase the Atmel content the Jtag port remains closed, pleaase look at post #1 : "Wait from 5 to 10 seconds after connect the 12v supply, the flash content will be erased and the Jtag option of the Mcu will be enabled now. If not work leave connected for about 3 to 5 minutes. Disconnect the 12v supply from carprog and remove the pin 55 wire from vcc. The pin 55 must remain disconnected until the programming process is done." For Jtag pinout check the post #2.

Erased the Atmel to ground? you'll never erase the atmel connecting the pin 55 to ground, as you can see in the post #1 the connection is to vdd test point of carprog, you need to make the erase procedure before to connect the carprog to the programmer. And yes, TCK is TCLK, NRST is TRST or RESET (doesn't matter, if you test continuity in programmer you can see that TRST and RESET are the same pin).

I used the manual for restoring JLINK V8 china clone . I am a great hurry and established at91sam256 carprog PCB jlink . after programming set in at91sam256 carprog and at me all earned. I did not have time to make detailed instructions I will try to do. to work with samba you need to install quartz 18.432 MHz

1. Stuck in the USB cord and closed the tweezers to place the first jumper 30 seconds - so that the end to clear the memory. Disconnect the cord.

Confirmed! Problem with Chinese clone causes 74HC125 if the A9 test connector all results "OK", but still can not read most of EEPROM and MCU.

If you do not read 24Cxx, 93Cxx and other series EEPROM, or reads, but with bugs and verification is not good, it is necessary to replace all 74HC.
I replaced all old 74HC125 and put 74HCT125D (Philips) and the device work properly.

Problem creating level CMOS (HC series). When you put the HCT series (TTL level) communication regularly, without fail.

In some cases the problem can generate power devices with a USB port, so after replacing HCT (TTL) is very desirable to bring external power 12V CarProg.

Voltage drop that is generated on the USB cable and within the device will not be enough for TTL HC series in some cases.

HC series works in the range from 2.6 to 5.0 V - Vcc
HCT series works in the range from 4.5 to 5 V - Vcc

When you use HCT series is TTL level ports in most cases guarantees proper communication with external eeprom, mcu ....

Hi friend, one question about your fix solution: there are 3 yellow condensators, you suggest to change them for 22mf but they are marked as "106 C" that means 10mf, in the older version of carprog the 3 condensators are 22mf but in the newest carprog they are marked as "106 C" = 10mf.

Friends, is any of us has a newer .lib file than v4.01??? Because, if you just reflash HW it means nothing without changing .lib file...a new SW will work (ok, counter will be reseted) but all new functions will be NA marked :(

I suppose you build hardware test adapter as per instructions and use it. Anyway all clones I've seen will fail D1 test but they are working normally.

Been reading thru this thread and it has sparked my interest. Bought a CarProg clone earlier this year but when I tried to use it for the first time smoked when I connected 12v power to it using the power adapter port. Opened the interface and found the c10 capacitor next to the L7805 IC U3 burnt out and shorting. Removed the shorting capacitor but did not replace it and then tried to connect it to my laptop but all it does is light up the green LED but will not be detected on my computer.
This is my first CarProg adapter and as a result have no idea of how it is meant to operate under normal conditions. Am I correct in assuming that the above mentioned repairs apply to a clone that is detected by the computer but fails to read eeproms and MCUs. If someone could help with a schematic diagram of the actual interface I would be most greatful.
Also was wondering what the 2 (8 pin) relays are for as I have not heard them operate at all on my interface.
Any helpand suggestions with this would be most appreciated.

i cannot connect to the jtag.
i use an mdfly jtag as in picture in 1st post
my lpt port is recognised by htag server
but when i try to connect to carprog it gives me a message..
...unable to find target...etc
i noticed that a small led lamp on mdfly flashes only when i power on carprog.
in a video someone uploaded here it was lit without powering on the carprog.
anyone with some ideas?

i noticed that when i do not connect vcc on carprog i get communication, but when i use flasher i select the mcu and then in programming i check the device not ok it does not read the id only that it is little endian
