Avensis 2.0 tdi 1998. sometimes not starting when hot. cold engine starts everytime, from half turn. but if i drive some and leave car for 15-30 min, it not starts, trying lot of times and at some stage it starts from half turn again. if i try start after i turn off, it starts always but if i leave for a while it dont. but if i leave for a long time and engine becomes cold, it start always. when driving, car goes good, no power loss, no cut outs. In ecu memory no faults... was trying check wiring and connectors visualy, all seems ok. any ideas? could be faulty pump?

Seems as if it could be fuel drain back to tank from air leak in fuel line including filter housing, the simplest way to confirm this is to fit a one way fuel valve between tank & filter. Fuel pump symptom normally faulter driving under load after cold start rather than hot start fault

if the fuel comes back to tank, it will be difficult to start in the morning too. but in the morning car starts perfect, from half turn.

Not always, you need to take into consideration factors of expansion & contraction of seals hot or cold, your symptom description seems like vapour lock which does not really occur cold. A connection or seal expands when warm allowing air to slowly enter. Air entering at atmospheric pressure pushes fuel back to tank, vapour lock occurs. Fit a valve or check for drain back if you can be certain of condition fault occurs. Certainly it may not be the fault but fitting a valve covers a portion of diagnosis. No codes no cold start problem no immediate warm start problem! vapour lock needs to be extinguished as a possibility. Maybe you haven't explained it as well as you could I can only go on how it reads to me

if its a d4d engine take a look at the scv valves on the pump

You could try changing the temperature switch on engine, it may be sending the wrong signal to ecu causing engine not to start when hot? http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/hmmmm.gif http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/hmmmm.gif

Get your Starter Motor checked and all earth wires...................Should be nice and clean.................Good Luck..............
If you want to be 100% sure then, when its hot and NOT starting try push start and see if it starts...........

starter motor, works every time. at first i thought about faulty temperature sensor. was trying to bypass it. disconnect and made showing 15 celsius all the time, using 3 kohms resistor, but it not solve the problem.

its not D4D engine, its 2.0 TD (90 HP). D4D engine comes from '99 on those avensis, mine is '98. starter motor works as it should. yesterday put new battery and it turns strong and fast. today found paint marks on pump, so someone already changed pump for some reason ( maybe the same reason) and it comes second hand from scrap. could it be cut off valve on pump? maybe its sticking when hot?

oh, if it has a plunger, remove it.
it will have to be stalled, see what happens
