2003 Audi A4 with dead CVT TCM in transmission. Has anyone tried installing a secondhand used TCM (the one inside the CVT Transmission) and recoding it? I cant get it to recode with VCDS, its always rejected. Does anyone know how to do this and if a Login Code is required? I see researching on the net that the Login should be 01283? I have tried everything to recode this TCM, I am beginning to wonder if the only soultion around this problem is to virginise the Engine ECU? Any ideas or experience with this would be greatful please guys

Hi.
You don't need to program used TCM in your case, if this ECU have a identical serial numbers (and identical software, of course) with original. Pin is not required never. You should do only adaptation, like jp_olli says (see attached pdf) with VAG-COM. Only on cars with 01J TCU after 2005 you need to do online coding via VAS 50xx , because this cars have a immo gen4 and component protection (6 bytes stored in TCU).
2 jp_olli: Vag k+can commander can`t rewrite SW in multitronic. I have tried..

The secondhand one was supplied to me by part number and when it arrived it was the same except the last two letters on the end, but i trust that the supplier knew this wouldnt make a difference as thats why they sold it to me I hope?
The original TCM = 01J 927 156 HH
8E0 910 155 K
Soft: 0000001
Workshop: 00102
Import: 771
Equip: 08513
The new used TCM = 01J 927 156 HT
8E0 910 155 K
Soft: 0000001
Workshop: 88776
Import: 111
Equip: 63210
I have tried everything to do the Clutch Adaptations with my VAG.com tool Original but it never works. It just says "ADP Run" all the time and will never change to "ADP Ok". It doesnt matter if you do it 5 times or even 30 times, it will never change. What to do next? Need help as urgent as possible, many thanks for everyones help so far

@ gtmech: Dont waste your time trying to do adaption with vcds it is not going work end of story. I repair these multitronic tcm units for a living and can tell you the following. You have to match the software in the tcm with the that of the vehicle ecu. You need to just use your vcds to read the software coding number. Write that coding down then get yourself VAS v19 and the vas software flashing dics and flash the tcm with new software.
I have the chart explaining how to choose which flash soft number to use but will have to look for it over this weekend.
I usually only flash the same tcm which came out the transmission after doing the 6 to 7 clutch upgrade. I have never had to fit a second hand tcm. Usually I repair the original tcm. Tell what was the actual problem with the original tcm? What fault codes did it come up with? I can lead you through the steps to repair it.

That's correct , only need to change soft coding , but with vas u can code manually , but the men don't have the vas , so the best solution ius change the flash+eeprom and no need coding.

@spawns3 that is not the correct information you are giving because you are talking about changing flash and eeprom in ecu. It will not help to change anything in the ecu, (the ecu is for engine). The TCM is for transmission and sits inside the transmission. You have to flash new software update into TCM and not into ecu. You can not do it manually and you must do it with VAS. Coding
To Code this transmission, make sure Ignition is ON, but Engine is NOT running.
When replacing this module use the coding from the original unit or the repair manual coding charts.
Adaptation
Special Procedures
Defined Test Drive
Prerequisites:
Ignition ON and Engine ON.
No Fault Codes stored.
Transmission Oil Temperature must be between 60 ?C and 90 ?C.
If the procedure does not succeed in the first try, make sure the temperature is above 80 ?C.
All driving and braking has to be done in partial load, avoid full throttle/braking!
Normally the adaptation needs to be carried out when:
Transmission Control Module has been recoded
Input Shaft has been replaced
Hydraulic Unit has been replaced
Transmission Control Module has been replaced
Transmission has been replaced

Block 011 (in 2nd Row)
[Go!]
Check fields 2, specification is ADP OK.
Move the selector lever in position D and drive with partial load 20 m / 70 ft forward, then brake to standstill.
Hold the brake for 10 seconds.
Move the selector lever in position R and drive with partial load 20 m / 70 ft reverse, then brake to standstill.
Hold the brake for 10 seconds.
The procedure needs to be repeated at least 5 times and can be repeated up to 10 times until the measuring values show ADP OK.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
Replacement
Run and save a complete Auto-Scan and save it prior to module removal. See the Online Manual Auto-Scan (http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/autoscan.html).
Code the module with the Coding from the original module found in the Auto-Scan.
Complete the Adaptation as shown above followed by the Defined Test Drive.
Note: The (4F) chassis Audi A6 uses Component Protection and will result in the 18109/P1701- Transmission Control Unit: Locked (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18109/P1701) fault after module replacement. The transmission will have limited functions prior to the dealer SVM process required for unlocking Component Protection
Special Notes
The CVT TCM must be ordered by VIN due to the specific programming related to the engine configuration, market/country configuration and 6 or 7 plate clutch system. The Component field (http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/open_screen.html) will display some of the mentioned information when scanning it with VCDS. Installing the incorrect TCM will have undesirable results.
If the Adaptation values are not stored to the TCM in the NAR (North American Region) Audi A4, A4 Cabrio and A6 models ranging from 2002 through 2008 see TSB: 37-08-20 (2015849/2). This TSB explains some of the conditions that may cause an unsuccessful adaptation drive.

Note that in your case you will still need to flash the tcm as in the youtube video above as the tcm unit you fitted is not virgin , (not new) and has different software on it.. I might be under correction but I am sure this information I give you is correct.

For the original poster of this thread here is the chart for flashing I was talking about and I hope it will help you solve your tcm problem for flashing the second hand tcm. Otherwise just repair the original tcm.
CVT Audi installation instructions
After the transmission is installed it is important that you follow exactly the procedure otherwise the transmission will NOT run or transmission damage will occur!
Relearning procedures are very important on CVT that substitute a clutch inside the transmission for a torque converter. If relearning procedures are not performed after any repairs, drivability problems and transmission failures will absolutely occur. Be aware that these procedures exist and that they must be performed.
To refill the transmission you need to have the proper tool or you build your own refill tool Audi not only has a clutch relearning procedure, but also a special procedure for changing the fluid. All four wheels must be off the ground a minimum of 8 in., and each wheel must be able to be rotated freely by hand. While observing the Tiptronic indicator, step-shift the CVT from its lowest ratio to its highest (six or seven speeds), accelerating moderately after each shift but never exceeding 35 mph. Shift the transmission back down to 1st gear and gently apply the brake until the wheels come to a stop. Once the wheels are stopped, place the transmission in Reverse, release the brake and moderately depress the accelerator to a Reverse gear speed of 12 mph. Once again, gently apply the brakes until the wheels come to a stop. Return the selector lever to Drive and repeat these steps five more times. When completed, place the selector lever in Park and turn the engine off. Now you're done, place the vehicle on the ground and now you are ready for the relearning process of reverse and forward adaptation.

If The data level is lower, load the latest TCM software. For flashing use update CD # 8E0-906-961J and update the gearbox software via "Self Diagnosis"
>>02 Gearbox>> Update programming
First ! battery must have a minimum no load charge of 12.5 Volts.
Important to connect batter to a powered approved battery charger ( see Audi specification)
Turn off the Radio and all other accessories.
Use vehicle specific entry to Guided Fault Finding
All failure memories on the car must be erased.
Select 02-Multitronic 01J Complaint report >> Power train >> Bucking when Accelerating from A Standstill. Now follow instructions on screen.
After flashing the TCM you are ready to perform an adaptation drive.
Adaptation forward and reverse
Now adapt the transmission Control Module (TCM)
Engine needs to be running and the transmission Oil Temperature must be between 60 grad and 90 grads'. confirm that the ATF is at a minimum 65 grad by checking the MVB 10 position 3.
No fault codes stored in engine and transmission control module.
All driving and braking has to be done in partial load, avoid full throttle/braking!
Shift vehicle into D
Drive forward in part load approximately 33 feet, then apply brake pedal to a stop and continue to apply brake pedal for 10 seconds.
repeat two to three times.
Shift vehicle into R and release brake pedal
Drive backwards at part load approximately 33 feet, then apply brake pedal to a stop and continue to apply brake pedal for 10 seconds
repeat step my two to three times.
Now connect your VAG tool and select 02 transmission Now select Measuring Block-08 select Block 10 and Go
Watch the second field on the Block this has to change from "ADP RUN" to "ADP OK"
The procedure needs to be repeated at least 5 times but maybe more as 10 times until the measuring values show APD OK.
If the second Block show APD OK push Done, Go Back
Now connect your VAG tool and select 02 transmission Now select Measuring Block-08 select Block 11 and Go
Watch the second field on the Block this has to change from "ADP RUN" to "ADP OK"
The procedure needs to be repeated at least 5 times but maybe more as 10 times until the measuring values show APD OK.
If the second Block show APD OK push Done, Go Back
"ADP" is the abbreviation for adaptation. Adaptation means adapting to an internal specified value.
If for some reason the values don't switch to APD OK read the failure codes and this will tell you what the problem is.

Hi buddy, what are the VAS software flashing discs and where do I get them from?
The actual problem was the TCM was faulty, flashing lights by gear change etc etc so sent it away for repair but they said it was to bad and not repairable so got a used secondhand replacement and thats where I am up to now as the coding and adaptations were not successful with VCDS. There are no fault codes, ive ordered the VAS and waiting for it to arrive but does the TCM still need to be re-flashed first? thanks for all help so far

@gtmech: let us try to solve your problem here for you very easy. For us to be able to help you with good results we need to know some information so I will ask you some questions.
1. the original tcm what fault codes did it have when you scanned it with vcds before you sent it away for repair?
2.when you sent the tcm away for repair did they open the black plastic part of the tcm?
3. Do you still have the original tcm?
4. they sold you a second hand tcm and you fitted it to the vehicle but I need to know does the vehicle start now after you fitted the second hand tcm? And does it drive at all with the second hand tcm?
5. If the vehicle drives with the second hand tcm, are the gear lights still flashing on the dash?
6.When you scan the auto transmission ( block 02) for codes what codes are coming up?
7. You must remember that if you scan with vcds and and no codes come up in auto trans (block 02), then go and scan ABS (block 03) and see what fault codes you have there and report back to us. Many times I have scanned auto trans and no fault codes but then I find the trans fault codes stored in ABS (block 03). Many times people clear the codes in auto trans scan and then the fault codes will not come up again until the vehicle is driven.
8. If you can do it do a complete auto scan of the vehicle and post the auto scan here and we will check it and help you but I am almost sure that we can help you repair the original tcm and save you a lot of time having to try get the second hand tcm to work. We have had many tcm units which other people have said can not be repaired but we have repaired them 100 %. So maybe you were dealing with the wrong people.

1. Sorry I dont remember and didnt save a copy of those fault codes.
2. Yes they cut it open and they said its not repairable and looking at it I definitely agree with them plus it has a broken sensor, there must be atleast 30 or more bad connections so repairing it is definitely out of the question.
3. Yes I still have the original TCM but its a mess.
4. Yes TCM is fitted in vehicle and car drives 100% perfectly with no faults at all. If the adaptions didnt need to be done then i would send job away because theres nothing wrong with the car anymore.
5. No, no lights are flashing anymore, theres no problems at all.
6. There are no fault codes at all.
7. There are no fault codes in ABS either, even after driving the car. The car is very happy with its used TCM installed but Im not because the coding and adaptations have not been successful.
8. Unfortunately its not repairable, I wish it was as it would of been an easier solution to making this problem go away. Complete autoscan is attached.
Thanks again for all the help

@gtmech, if you have no fault codes but adaption is completing itself and shows "ADP RUN" and not changing to "ADP OK" then it can only be 2 things wrong which is:
1). before you do the adaption make sure in measuring blocks that your transmission fluid is not lower than 60 d/c and not higher than 90 d/celses. If your fluid temp is below or above that then adaption will not complete.
2). when you do your driving adaption (forward/reverse), make sure you dont go over 30km/h speed or else adaption will not complete and also your braking must not be hard braking but a slow down until stop. And when you stop keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal for 10 seconds before you shift from drive into reverse etc. Then adaption will take place "OK".

No refalshing of this secondhand TCM is required? Just plug it in? But the coding data is wrong aswell so isnt this going to be a problem?

No refalshing of this secondhand TCM is required? Just plug it in? But the coding data is wrong aswell so isnt this going to be a problem?
The correct way is to use VAS and flash the tcm however I have seen many , many, many of these tcm units in vehicles with the wrong coding but they seem to work ok for many years. So if you are worried about a come-back job then I would say get VAS and code it, otherwise just perform adaption as I have explained and see if it comes up "ADP OK".

Thanks for all your help mate, well I have just tried another 4 times and it refuses to accept the adaptations so reflashing is the only thing left to do even though I dont think its necessary for this situation. Thanks to everyone for your contribution, I think best solution to to tell customer to get rid of the car and buy a decent car because these are a piece of s**t
