Good day members of DK

I hope that some of the members can help with this strange problem. Vehicle is a Opel Meriva z16xe, 2004/2005 model. It came to me from the agents/dealer. Problem was a misfire on the engine. Dealer fitted a new coil pack and misfire still there. They checked it for 1 week before they told the customer they suspect it has internal engine problem and they would have to strip engine and check. But at the same time referred the customer to me.

Vehicle arrived at my shop. Checked new plugs fitted by agents, compression is 14 bar on all 4 cylinders, coil pack is new dealer part, fuel pressure is perfect, carried out cylinder leak-down test and cylinders hold their pressure. All meaning that there can not be any internal engine problems the agents are referring too. ( As it has a long coil pack supplying spark we extended it with boggi leads so we can do the wire removal trick to check which cylinders are misfiring. 1 and 4 are misfiring and all plugs burning rich).

Scanned the vehicle and came up with the following fault codes:

Total number of fault codes: 4

P0351 - Ignition 1 Control Circuit
(00) - Not present

P0352 - Ignition 2 Control Circuit
(00) - Not present

P0353 - Ignition 3 Control Circuit
(00) - Not present

P0354 - Ignition 4 Control Circuit
(00) - Not present

Cleared fault codes, started vehicle and engine ran perfect for 30 seconds without misfire then began to misfire for 10 seconds and then cut off. Scanned vehicle and no more fault codes. Started vehicle and no misfire for 30 seconds and again started to misfire for 10 seconds and cuts out. Checked all wiring and all seems ok but can not understand how and why the vehicle misfires but does not have anymore fault codes. Checked compression again and it is perfect. Can any members maybe throw some light on this problem?

Many thanks in advance

I had a vectra which has been a constant problem with only two cylinders.
Twice changed the ignition coil.
The third time, changed the original, and all the problems disappeared.

By the way ask whether the battery has not been replaced.

Battery was not replaced and charge rate is perfect. It has genuine dealer coil on it, brand new.

well there are two coils in the coil pack, one must be ok at least for it to run at all,can you not measure the coil primary and second resistance and compare them?

Primary and secondary resistance is perfect. And it is a brand new dealer coil.

what about running it with spark plug extensions you know the ones that are yellow coloured designed so you can see the spark.. then at least you could see it the failing is down to a spark dropping off.. if it is i would then run a scope onto the feed to the coil and see if that is failing.. if not then but be a faulty coil pack... if it is ok scope it back at the ecu and then you can deduct if it is ecu failing or wiring...

is it poss to scope the coil primaries and see wif the coils are still getting switched as it oes from 4 cyls to 2 cyls?,to my mind its either a prob with the coil pack, the loom from the coils to the ecu or the ecu has an issue with the mosfets or triacs or whatever switches toi coil that isnt working!

Connecting several multimeter's
One of the coil + power
One of the ecu + power
And one of the - ground coil breakers
And wait until the switches off
You'll see where the stream disappears above goes out
And do not forget crankshaft
