It's not hard to remove this dash. When you adjust mileage, you need to reset check sum as well. It is safer to program through cluster as you can back it up 24c16 eeprom contents before do any modification to the cluster.

Yes any eeprom programmer that support read 24c16 chip can be used to do this. Read the chip in 16bit mode. Download this calculator software ( remember to read whole thread) http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f174/etsmart-calculators-v1-free-all-407190/

You will find .cal file from HCIP for ford. use that to change the dump you have read from your dash ( Remember to back up you original file). Then change the check sum location of 0526 and 0527 to 00 00. That's it. No fancy programmers needed for this. If you don't know how to do it. Just post your dump and I will adjust you the mileage and post it back to you.

upa as a means to read it mate or willem or in fact any eeprom reader.............. you can use a tangerine or a melon for all I care :)

and 00 00 works fine for the complex crc lol

why must reset checksum i never heard that you must reset checksum when you programing mileage if you have a calculator.
Is it for this ford ranger car only?

No,there are other vehicles that this applies to also....If you don't change the Checksum,dash will give you error..

Meaty,what you'll find is that every vehicle in the world has a checksum built into the VIN.From memory,it's digit 9 in the VIN.

I didn't know that, well not really, I knew there was a check digit but didn't know it was for checksum. Any idea how it's calculated, or is it just a sum?

No,it's based on weighted tables,involving the whole vin sequence.I used to know how to work it out,but couldn't be arsed anymore.
