Hi guys!, Haven't been on here a while, My new dual core Zgemma box is arriving on Monday, I'm coming from a F5s box so its a big step up from what i had before but I use to have a Vu solo so I'm not new to enigma 2,
The question I have is that I haven't had an enigma 2 box in a very long time, I notice a guy on this forum doing full backups of the original dual tuner Zgemma and wondered if he was considering doing it for the dual core version for the newbies? if not I could provide one once I get myself reacquainted again, one last question what is the best image for the zgemma? as I noticed on the official site there is quite a few to choose from and since its been a few years since ive last flashed images it used to be blackhole for my solo and I'm guessing that it not true anymore, cheers guys.

Better images are ViX IMO, some like the OpenATV shipped with the box. They are all base images and not configured, don't expect a configured image from a discount seller. I have seen some image backups posted, you do need one specifically for the box.

I would love to make a backup image for the zgemma h2s , however, for me to do this I'd need the zgemma h2s box itself which unfortunately I don't own.
Openatv5.1 all the way

Ok what is the main difference between openatv and vix ? And is it true that you out can't update vix OTA but you can with openatv?

Read this thread, has a good debate on the pros/cons of each image, there's also a guide made for the 2s for each image which you could use for h2s just make sure you get the correct firmware from HR Zgemma.tv website.

Not if you follow the guide and install the older compatible Crossepg 0.6.2 and disable it from updating to the newer versions.

You can update ViX from the menu but as it's not officially supported by ViX, it will change the box label from ZGemma to Mutant.

Hi guys just an update, I stayed with Open atv, my first impressions is not that great so far, been using it for about 48hr, so far ive had at least 7+ hard crashes, 2 of them when I was adding autobouques, another thing I noticed is that the English translation is not finished in the menu and subsystem so a lot of thing are still in German, other than that the defult skin is quite beautiful! I love it! I had a friend come over and he asked me what box I was using, another question for you pro's out there, whats the status for on demand plugins? like itv bbc channel 5 ect?, and I have another problem, for some reason in atv I can't get the defult epg to populate more than 1 hour in advance

Was that from the default/factory installed Openatv image or from one you flashed on to the box, If you reflash the latest image then complete the initial setup then install autobouqetsmaker then reboot you should avoid the German and the crashes, unless the latest H2S Openatv image has loads of bugs that the 2S openatv image doesn't have.
other than that the defult skin is quite beautiful! I love it! I had a friend come over and he asked me what box I was using,
You want to try kiddac's $ky skin, then get your friends around, available from the guide @post#5 (then page 2 of that thread post #26)

Rubbish

You need to install either Crossepg or xmltv importer and set it up. I use Crossepg but later versions ain't compatible with openatv, follow my guide to install in #5 to install an older working version.

cheers for the quick reply martin, going to try both cross epg and xmltv importer, bit disappointed on the on demand side would of been nice to have it all on the box but can't have everything I suppose! one thing that is working flawlessly even in HD is streaming from the box to my computer, last night I watched the football on the pc in HD while the misses was watching corrie! ideal!, I guess another question is could this work on any device with VLC or any compatible streaming device?

Install KodiDirect and then you can get the BBC and ITV player on there.

I use VLC on my windows PC and XMTV Player on my Android Tablet & Phone (VLC won't open the stream on an Android device). IF your brave you can also open a port on your router and stream to the internet so you can view the footy at work, but understand this does have a security risk hence why I don't bother.

aaarrrggghh don't think I've ever been this frustrated by an enigma 2 box!, got most things working but for the life of me timeshift/recording will not work at all pressing pause will not enter into time shift just a little cross, I've entered the right settings pointing my external hardrive as the right destination drive, for some reason it just flat out refuses to work, when I try to record it just says can't record, I tried another external drive to make sure it wasn't the drive, I never remember having all these problems and crashes with my old Vu box just hope I haven't made a mistake with buying this box, other than that the new cross epg works flawlessly everything is populated perfectly! and the skin you said about was brilliant!, maybe I should try to re-flash or is it time for a different image? maybe this box being new is causing problems?

Have you formatted the Hard drive to ext3 then converted to ext4?
1. Menu-setup-system-storage devices-Initialisation, Select your drive and format it
2. Menu-setup-system-storage devices-Ext3 to Ext4, Select your drive and change filesystem

That is not required for recording. Ext3 and 4 are only required for linux functions but the hdd can also be formatted to fat32 for recording functions however if you choose to initialise the hdd through the menu system it will automatically be formatted to ext4

It was something I read on another forum to cure this problem and something I always do when setting up a new box, it might fix exhumed's problem but it might just be the fact these boxes are so new that the firmware images have some bugs in them.

yes martin it was the first thing I done, when I tried to timeshift it said error timeshift cannot work as hardrive is using ext4...so then I thought aaaah must be an icompatibility with ext4 and timeshift so for timeshift to work the hardrive needs to be ext3 only so I reformatted again for it still not to work although I don't get an error now it just doesn't work.. so strange, as with other boxes I've set up before (Gigablue Quad plus, vu solo 2, ect) it just works, one frustrated man here atm,

umm something I haven't tried yet is using fat32....but jeez in the year 2015 I'm having to format a 2tb external hd to fat32 just to record? :( but like martin said this may be a bug, think I should go on the zgemma forums to see if anyone else is having problems?

Exhumed, can't believe I'm about to say this, but perhaps it's time to try another image ie openvix or HD freaks and see if there's any difference.
You could this HD freaks backup image by thomas88, it's not mine so can`t help with any questions on setting it up post flashing but I'm sure you'll manage.

Lol, don't know only tried Openatv and Openvix, but what you've got to lose, the image is made for the H2S so if it works, you could then build you own image using a vanilla HD freaks image and plugins of your choice.

Courtesy of digicon, Official Zgemma Images are:
OpenATV
OpenHDF
Opendroid
Openspa
Eurosat
Italysat
vix4e2 was supported to, but I think they've withdrawn there support now.

Italysat, hdfreaks & openatv are three fully supported images I think there is another one but i can't remember of the top of my head. Vix is patched so is likely to have the odd issue

It may not be formatting or mounting correctly. Did the op check the mountpoints to ensure it's there if it is visible then maybe try formatting with a third party to ext4 or 3. minitool partition wizard is a decent free one

Hi H.H, yes I did check to make sure it was mounted and was visible and had loads of available space, I think a thirdparty tool to format may be a good idea, maybe its a bug in openatv? either way quite frustrating, but then I guess that's the fun with enigma 2, is getting the right image, but from setting up my friends zgemma single core it didn't crash once! so maybe teething problems as I think this new box isn't that old?

I have an h2 that won't initialise or format drives/usb sticks. It tells you it has but it lies. I format them in my quad+ or my uno and then plug them in job done lol btw all the boxes are running openatv
ExHuMeD
11th December, 2015, 10:50 AM
so maybe it is a bug? so if I format them on my computer in ext4 would that be enough? or does the box need to initialise it? or is initialise just basicly formatting the drive in ext4 and mounting?
digicon
11th December, 2015, 12:01 PM
You can only format the drive in your computer in ext4 if you are running a linux based operating system as EXT4 is a Linux orientated format, if your running windoze then Fat32 will be the next best option

Hi digicon, so I couldn't use partition master to format it to ext4? I have an old laptop with Ubuntu I'm thinking I may have to dig it out, I'm really regretting getting the zgemma now should of went for the gigablue quad, I formatted it to ext4 with partition master and its saying the drive is not readable does it have to be mounted in the box before it can be read? pulling my hair out here really don't remembering it being this hard just to set up timeshift/recording

You need to Mount it as a /media/hdd in the device manager before the hard drive will be seen

Hi Guys, I was looking at purchasing the same box, But after reading this Im now not so sure.
Is the :Zgemma Star 2S Twin Tuner Satellite Receiver easier to configure?
Newbie question but does the image have the sky channels included? and if you don't have an internet LAN connection but very weak WiFi connection can we still update the channels as required?

You need to check your mounting is correct and check your timeshift setup is pointing to the correct folder, the 2nd part is easy to miss. I have used OpenViX with FAT32, it throws up an error msg but timeshifts anyway. Using EXT3 or EXT4 it timeshifts OK. You can format the drive in Windows using FAT32 formatter, set to EXT3 but best to remove all partitions first

I've got recording working! by mounting it as digicon said it starting recording as it should! if others are having the same problem I formatted the drive using a third party tool then initialised it on the zgemma box it worked!! can't remember if I'm now using ext3 or 4!! not to sure!! but for the life of me I cannot get timeshift working I have set it to the right folder, it just does nothing when I press pause, I think I may flash the vix image and try that its the only image aprt from openpli that I haven't tried yet, don't be put of KB007, I think the problems I'm having is either due to the fact my box is the new zgemma and its a software problem or I'm doing something wholely retarded, but I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right I never had this problem on other enigma boxes.,, think it's time to flash a non (proper) image

I found it!!! I think I've found the bug!!!! it's to do with the path links in the timeshift settings page!! for some reason even though its the right path and it displays the right amount of storage space left in the settings page, the link seems to be broken, I'm not a programmer so don't quote me, if the link is /media/hdd/ it should work.. but it doesn't if you change it and direct it to just /hdd/ as the timeshift location save it, try to pause it will give you an error about about broken links and hardrive not ext2 or 3 ignore the error and restart your box then try and timeshift and it should work, can any of your pro's explain why this works?
I was using open driod image I'm now about to flash openatv and try it on there as I prefer it as it feels more smooth

The correct timeshift path should be /media/hdd or usb/timeshift/ (don't forget the first and final slash) unless the drive has been mounted to another location. Best to check device manager for the correct drive mount location then create a timeshift folder on that drive (if there's not one there) and change the timeshift settings to suit.

Just to update everyone, I have given up on openatv the problems with timeshift was not worth it, I finally got it working but every time I changed channel I would get an error message but time shift still worked, no doubt this is a bug and probably be worked out in later updates, long story short I flash open vix and I wished I did this from the start, cross epg already there, no crashing or error msgs, timeshift just worked no need to change any settings, the only setting I had to change was how may setting into the channel it would start recording, even the recording directory was already correct, the Vix image even though it's not officially supported seems to me anyway so much better, witch seems crazy when its not even the official image, anyhoo I hope others reading this having problem like me, may help may not, don't really want to be using open vix but seems i have no choice. but if it aint broke don't fix it right?

You can update ViX from the menu but as it's not officially supported by ViX, it will change the box label from ZGemma to Mutant.
How can i rename it back to Zgemma H2S after ive done the update? Do you know which file it references?
Cheers
