Hi Guys,
Struggling with a VP-44 pump issue. Ford Transit 2004 2.4 duratorq.
Has no power, sounds like a bang of nails when revving, error code P0148. From reading posts at various forums, looks like the timing solenoid might be the culprit here.
Can any one confirm diagnosis, and any handy tips on replacing would be appreciated !
Ford want $5000+ to replace the whole pump.
Cheers,
Brett

I guess these instructions and iformation will help all with Vp44 related issues.
I?ve been studying how to repair the pump edc. Here in Finland we have quite many Opel / Vauxhall enthusiasts struggling with VP44.
To attach the new transistor to the aluminium body I?ve used silver loaded epoxy from RS. It holds well and transfers heat away from the component.
Next week I?m going to test how IRLR2905PBF will work as a replacement part.
Hope that it would work.
EDIT: The silver loaded epoxy also conducts electricity very well when it has dried, so you can use it for bonding the gate and source pins to the pcb.

When you change the transistor, will there be any issues regarding reprogramming of the pump ?
jp_olli
8th January, 2010, 06:24 AM
I?m not quite sure. The goal is that the new transistor would be as similar as possible so injection quantities would be correct.
If that works there is no need to reprogram the edc because usually it is going to the same car as it has been removed from.
And if any issue should come, I just have to study more about reprogramming the edc.
One thing one local diesel workshop has been asking me is, how to reset the memory fields in the edc. Since they can only try to calibrate the new edc four times and it gets locked and usually scrapped.
Don?t know yet... Hopefully there would be a way to do that.

I am not sure how it all works on this site yet i do believe to understand that I need to leave a post first before i can download information. I would like to appologise if all of a sudden this message appears all over the site. I am trying not to perform foolish things but since I am not familiair with how things work I am just trying to make the best out of it. It is to my understanding that I will have to wait now for 15 minutes. So here I go hoping it will work.

I have a question regarding VP33. I just saved Focus TDDI from being scraped and apparently someone has fitted a Transit pump (code 0470004012). I was told that it requires 0470004002/0470004007 pump but these are difficult to get and there are many 0470004006 also from Focus.
Can you please tell me if i can use 0470004006 instead of 0470004002/07 and what are the differences between these pumps? (solenoids, electronics etc)
I have spoken to many specialists and some say that I can use them, some that I can't and the main problem is that I have to pay ?150 to remove pump code so that it will work with my car and I don't want to loose it decoding wrong pump.
Many, many thanks for your help.

Hi all ,
today i`ve registered , I see some ppls from here are romanian (like me also) ... they have right , injection pump ecu problem is one mosfet (original code is FDB44n25 ) ... I`ve heard he can be substitute by IRFZ44 / IRFZ44N OR IRF540 OR IRLR2905 ..etc :)
Also I have one vectra B 2.2 dti (vp44 pump) ... same problem , I`ve removed the ECU , I tryed to substitute the 44n25 with the irfz ... but don`t work (low debit) ... anyone can give me a picture how to make the connection with irfz44 ? thanks a lot

I've just used the IRFZ44N transistor replacement fix. I discovered that one of the the original transistor wires was broken possibly melted. The car started but the Transistor got very hot and then the car cut out. If this drives one of the solenoids could the solenoid be faulty?
I bought a few transistors and I can replace the new one quite easliy. Was over the moon when the car started but now chasing something else.
Fault code 01268 came up and when I cleared that and tried to start again the original 01318 code reappeared. I think it is the solenoid. Can anyone confirm?
John.

Thanks AKTIV but how do you know? The car started which it wouldn't do before and then cut out after about a minute. The wiring still looks to be intact although I shall go back out and have another look.
Do i need to get a good heatsink onto the transistor? Doesn't look as if I could get a good sink onto it unless I mount it externally.

What do you do for 500 Euros? Replace all mechanical parts or just change a transistor?
Would you be also so kind and let me know if VP30 Focus pumps 007 and 006 are interchangeable? (can I use 006 instead of 007?)

Hy guys! Iknow alot of people ho have many problems with theyr diesel cars like: BMW 2.0d 136hp, audi, opel, ford etc... One of the major problem is BOSCH VP30 VP44 injection pump. The symptoms are:
>the engine stops and don't start
>eraticle idling
>sometime don't start
Well i have the solutions for thi problem. I succesfully repaired about 12-14 pieces of vp44 and i did alot of pictures with explinations and parts you need it to repair this pumps. The pieces costs about 1 eur :)))))
If someone need this infos i will be glad to exchange this infos with another software or infos.

I have read somewhere on another forum (do not recall which one I am sorry) that the broken wire on the transistor is a common failure with all these Bosch pumps from before 2003 manufacturing date. It appears that the design of this wire is to short so that after a couple of years it simply brakes of due to expanding and shrinking due to heating and cooling. This has got nothing to do with the solenoid. Yet your solenoid could still be broken but the first reason seems more obvious to me. I hope this helps. I have got the same problem with my Ford focus. It is a stupid costly failure.

kasp.

If the information I have seen sofar is correct and the original mosfet has # 44n25 than it is a fet that can dissipate a power of up to or around 300w. The original fet is mounted directly to the pump lid. This way it will loose a lot of its heat. In addition to this the lid is cooled using its own fuel underneath in the housing thus all together a very good cooling is quaranteed.
Fet replacement should work as long as you are able to fix it in such a way that it can loose its heat. Whether the IRFZ44n (power dissipation 94W) is a good replacement I do not know. I also do not know if the way it is shown to rebuild is correct, I have got a lot of questions still myself. Currently I am investigating if IRL 2505 would be better. It has higher current features as own power dissipation (200W) . Anyway no matter what you choose it will at least have to have a proper way of cooling (my modest opnion).

Does anyone know if there is a change to change a software in the pump. I mean if there is a chance to fit pump from opel to lets say bmw?
I know there are pumps communicating via k-line and via can. A6 is a can and A4 is K-line even with the same engine AKE. For the future is there any chance to adaptate one to another?
PS if someone need I have a complette VP44 for a4 04 180bhp, AKE engine. I got it for allroad but as I was saying a6's have can communication a4 k-line.
Many thanks for interest

The day before yesterday I have in the garage an Opel Astra G 2.0 DTH engine pump vp44, trouble code 1630, I found and changed the faulty transistor with a new IRFZ44N engine started, going well at idle but is not accelerating more than 1300 rpm.Yesterday an BMW E46 320d she had the same problem the same result .What is wrong?

so, 1630 is wrong mechanics, not electronics!!! For example Opel - code 1631 or 1651 is wrong electronics / code 1630 or 1650 is wrong mechanics, so if you changed tranzistor, you have good elektronics, which you can use on another mechanics...

Hello everyone, I've only just joined this forum so I hope that you don't mind me getting involved in this long running thread. I've just had to replaced my Vp30 pump on my Rover 45 diesel. I still have the old one, which I'd like to have a go at repairing - hence my interest in this thread.
However, on the subject of reprogramming of the pump. To fix my car I got a pump from another car (I got the garage the fit it though), so I can categorically say that no programming is required. Pump timing is important, though, they should be locked before removal.

The electronic device from my pump VP44 is broken and I want to ask if you have some informations how to fix the problem. The error is : Fuel Pump Speed/Position Sensor Signal Lost . I saw that many defects are related to transistor. Know how to change transistor ( where is G S and D pins on board ) or how to see if the sensors work ok? I know that Pins 6 and 7 ( FPCM connector ) is for power 6 GND and 7 power 12 V but when the power is on ....I don't see any power signal to sensors terminals and of course the sensors can not return signal . I want to mention that I work in electronics domain and I have all necessary equipment .

Well, you can be sure that the solenoid coil is not open-circuit, but not that it doesn't have shorted turns - unless you have a very accurate meter, with a 'divide by' function. If you can remove the solenoid , you could bench test it, by applying a test voltage from a suitable source and checking if it switches - or by measuring the current flow through it.

Hey guys!
Anyone tried to put the transistor outside EDC to prevent it from overheating? There would be a lot more airflow, on the downside you would need long wires.

Hey guys!
Anyone tried to put the transistor outside EDC to prevent it from overheating? There would be a lot more airflow, on the downside you would need long wires.
You would need to protect the transistor from the harsh environment that it would be subjected to on the outside of the EDC. Far better to bolt it to the inside, using a mica washer and a plastic insulator. Used with silicon grease, this arrangement would use the metal top of the EDC as a very good heat sink.

Anyway, I needed to post something, and I was just a bit noodled at having to wait (I hate waiting) to get at info. I've read the whole thread now and hopefully have enough info to allow me to attempt to fix my vp44 by soldering in an IRF540... and I WILL come back with my results. Only trouble is, I'm not sure if the locking device on the pump slipped when I removed it, in which case I have lost TDC forever?
Anyhow, good luck to all, and hope I may be of use infuture myself...

1. Is IRF540 any better than IRFZ44N?
2. Didnt have much to do with VP44s, but istn't there a TDC mark on the pump gear/pulley?

Mine is exactly the same, but I've managed to locate some FDB44n25 transistors. The problem now is how best to mount them. The wiring diagram pdf on page 4 of this thread is very useful, but it doesn't suggest the best way to fix the transistor to the pcb to help with heat dissipation. Someone earlier suggested some silver epoxy stuff from RS, but it is over ?40 a pot. Has anyone successfully replaced the FDB44n25 yet, or have any suggestions on the best way to mount it?

I will use a flux-cored solder. The important thing is to make sure that the surface you want to solder to is thoroughly clean. There are solvents specially to do this, but gentle scraping and roughing should work.
Archibald

By people that used it and aparently this is the best one tha can be used. I am not sure that VP30 and VP44 need same transistor.

Not from me, I'm afraid. I'm no nearer solving this problem of where to mount the replacement transistor. The silver epoxy already suggested does seem to be the answer, but it's very expensive for a one-off.

According the the chap earlier in the thread (I think he was from Finland), who recommended the stuff (from RS), yes you could use it to bond the transistor pins to the pcb.

Trying to solder it in right now using the pics found on this forum - but I cant get the solder to stick on the very small plate where the old mosfet connected. May have to try the 'straight to pins' method also mentioned earlier in the thread, but somone said that does not work, so I'm reluctant to do it.
Archibald

Check the resistance between small pad and the pin and you'll find that there's no direct connection between them (some resistance). Both pins have the same resistance so on both there's a connection! I have not seen anyone succeed doing it this way, but I have seen posts that it cam damage the pump ECU.
This small connection is bloody pain and I had the same problem. You have to use a lot of flux and only solder it for a second. I think that excessive heat input damages the connection and the only way to fix it is to use a silver loaded epoxy.

Ah that's a idea, that might not work, can't see it on their website, but B&Q do for ?8 a 'nail varnish size' pot of copper 'paint' the idea is that thick plumbers that have no idea on how to hold a blowtorch, paint this crap on the two copper fittings and ram the two pipes together
Water pressure is 12bar, and (off topic) your gas pipe has to be bonded
to your electric pipe, so does this stuff conduct?
(although dear do) if a thick plumber piped an entire house with this shit
would it pass electrical saftey tests?
Maplin do some 'thermal glue' for glueing heatsink to computer cpu
(don't use it on your computer, shit idea) but might work on this project.
Can't see all this 'heat sink' stuff bing a problem, it currant trasnsitr is 150k old and 8years old!

Hello,
This is my first post here so hello everyone and thank you for your help. I am from Romania but study in the UK at the moment.
My dad has a Ford Transit 2.0 from 2002. He stopped to get something from a shop and when he tried to start the engine, it wouldn't start. He had no previous problem with the car before and the guys from the Ford dealership say that the pump is faulty. It sounds like a electrical problem to me. The pump is VP-30, code 0470004004. Do you think that changing the transistor would be a good idea?
Thank you,
Alex

it won't inject if the fuse has blown. it's also worth checking the multiplug on to the back of the pump as the wiring can rub thru or rot thru moisture ingress. is there any communication to the pump if the vehicle is plugged in???

Hello Everyone,
I am new here.
I wondered if any of you have any experience with reflashing the VP44 pump ECU. Apparently there is a software limitation built in by bosch that restricts fuel quantity to about 210bhp in the Audi 2.5 TDI's.
The VP44 on the big Cummins engines are mechanically the same and are up to much highr power levels, but of course we can't just bolt them on an Audi because the engine ECU checks the pump ECU and doesn't recognise it.
But theoretically it should be possible to modify the soft in my opinion.

Just to add my 'half pennth worth'
Although I have not done this project myself, I read that you are all having the same problem with soldering. Now busaman is suggesting aluminum solder. If this is the correct stuff then I'm not surprised that you are having problems. Lead solder or lead free solder is made to join copper & low temperature stuff. If the solder on the components is Aluminum then it wont mix. Quite poss it is a high temp silver solder used. We had some projectors that the lamps were soldered in place & due to the heat I'm sure used silver solder.
Mind you I could be talking out of my ar*e & I'm sure your going to tell me so :)

I don't think so, in fact your post was very helpful. Not sure if your silver solder suggestion is the answer though. I too am having this problem with soldering the connections of this transistor - lead solder is clearly not the correct stuff for the job. What I don't understand, though, is why all those who posted earlier in this thread that they had successfully replaced this faulty transistor, now seem to have gone very quiet on the subject!

Well, I couldn't get the solder to stick either - just no way, not on the board itself. However, following the suggestion on an earlier post, I soldered to the connections coming in from the side without any problems. Only trouble is, it still don't work! Maybe that method is a crock of shit, or maybe my pump timing slipped when I was removing it... in which case I think I'm stuffed anyway? Does anyone know if the pump timing is recoverable, as there's no woodruff keyway on these things. I'm almost out of motivation on this & thinking of scrapping the damn thing! (Rover 25 TDI)

If my memmory is right, I think it was 100-150?...maybe less.
