Do you mean rent or borrow a game ans store on harddrive and play at later date. NO You Cant

If a borrow a game and install it on the hdd...give the game back to a friend....then at a later date buy my own copy....will the installed version still play??

You can't play backups on the PS3.

As far as I know you cannot actually "install" the games on the PS3 hard drive in it's entirety unlike what was possible with the old Xbox (happy days ). But again as far as I know the only thing that you can do (or is mandatory rather) is have the game "install" parts of the game to your PS3 hard drive in order to act as a permanent "cache" of sorts in order to help reduce loading times/stutters.

How significant this practice is I do not know yet since I don't actually own a PS3. Perhaps someone else can clarify ?
