Default Vu Clone Duo Blown PSU

I inadvertently bought a Chinese Edition Duo last week! Thought I would stick with it and was very happy with the box until today.

Whilst sliding the box back in the cabinet heard a loud pop and a flash. I power cycled it and the same thing happened again - and it is now totally dead.

Opened up the box to find one of the power transistors had blown open and also looks like the 15amp fuse has blown

So gutted. I don't suppose I will get much support from the supplier or manufacturer. Not confident to replace the parts myself and still no idea what caused it.

Can anyone advise where I can get a cheap replacement PSU or repair?

    Thanks

try mixeshop for a spare PSU if your not confident in repairing the blown capacitors

get in touch with the supplier you got it from and ask them for a replacement psu free as this seems to be getting more widespread

I have gone ahead and ordered a replacement board from mixeshop as well as contacted the seller to try and get a replacement.

The obvious damage to the board is the power switch attached to one of the heat sinks (Fairchild part 5L0565R), it has literally blown in half. Apart from the fuse everything else looks ok including the caps.

My main worry is that I plug in a new PSU board and the same happens again. Anybody know if this damage is likely to have been a result of a faulty PSU rather that something wrong with the mainboard or hard drive.

    Thanks

Mines went on an original Vu Duo m8, got it replaced under warranty, main board etc was fine, sure your main board will be to.

Did anyone have 3amp fuse fitted to plug and do they use surge protection as a matter of interest ?
Also were the boxes overheating because fan wasn't turning ?
Or were the boxes hot ?

all my stuff is surge protected and all cables are protected also
it would be nice to see what other people use with their faulty boxes.

3 amp fuse, plug has a its own APC surge protector also, thats My Ultimo, at the time when my Duo went it had a 3 amp fuse but was connected to a strip power surge connector, think to be honest it was just a bad power supply and I was unlucky :-)

If you know which part has blown and you know how to solder it should be fairly easy to replace the part.

Default some info on switching transistor

Please check correct part no first:-
    Description
The Fairchild Power Switch(FPS) product family is specially
designed for an off-line SMPS with minimal external
components. The Fairchild Power Switch(FPS) consists of a
high voltage power SenseFET and a current mode PWM IC.
Included PWM controller integrates the fixed frequency
oscillator, the under voltage lock-out, the leading edge
blanking, the optimized gate turn-on/turn-off driver, the
thermal shutdown protection, the over voltage protection,
and the temperature compensated precision current sources
for the loop compensation and the fault protection circuitry.
Compared to a discrete MOSFET and a PWM controller or
an RCCsolution, a Fairchild Power Switch(FPS) can reduce
the total component count, design size and weight and at the
same time increase efficiency, productivity, and system
reliability. It has a basic platform well suited for the cost
effective design in either a flyback converter or a forward
    converter

The PSU blew from a cold startup with the fan spinning and connected via a 5 amp fused plug to a surge protected power strip.

I did notice a small ball of solder on the PSU board but I think it was stuck to the board rather than loose - cant quite remember as I was still in shock at having my receiver go up in smoke after less than a week and at the start of the BH weekend to boot.

Anyway happy to report that the supplier responded to my email within an hour agreeing to provide a replacement board

Seems to be a lot of PSUs in clone going pop from what I've read. Hope they sort this out soon.

Well it must be a bad batch of 5L0565R as mine has just blown as well even though my new clone never powered up properly.
A resistor on the solder side of the board was also fried R05 god knows what value it was.
There are dirt cheap 5L0565R on ebay from our chinese friends I wonder if they are any good .
