You need a utility called IFA (Image Flashing Assistant). Have you got a Sagem?

Is it 1x or 2x, and if you are not sure, it is really important that you find out.

some friend, not too sound too harsh, but does your friend know what he is doing, did he not check your box was a 1x or 2x (all Nokia;s are 2x but Sagem can be 1x or 2x)

as someone stated you need

1 x null modem serial cable
1 x network cross over cable
1 x VALID image for your box
1 x IFA Application
100 x Patience

You don't need the null modem cable, it's just quicker on a 1x sytem (15 mins without) if you do. Plus you get some feedback, but not essential.

I for some reason always get problems with only the x-over cable, hence use the null modem cable and get more success.

More trouble than flashing a new image!

Make sure you reboot the dbox AFTER you have setup the IFA and started the download.

That sounds wrong, what I mean is
1 Start IFA setup the image location, and start the download.
2. Unblock firewall if asked, and then power up the dbox.

IFA needs to launch a bootp server that the dbox only looks for on power up.
