Serious Problem

My computer is "****ed". It has a virus or something i dno, I turn it on and it just constantly restarts before even reaching the desktop.

I am not too botherd about the computer, I plan to get a new one in the not too distant future! But I would really like some of the files on it, Lots of photoshop wprl and college work that doesnt have a backup!.

Is there any way of getting them off? or if I reformat will I still be able to get them?

The photoshop work is what is most important to me as I am getting a portfolio together to start my own website. So any help would be greatly greatly appreciated!

take your hard drive out and put it in your new pc, as a slave, your files should be ok.

sounds like your PC is missing a file it needs to use when booting up, and maybe its been deleted.

but all your stuff will be on there, just make sure you do a virus scan.

you can also buy an external hard drive case and put that hard drive in there and use it as an external drive.

but once you got your valuablle files , fdisk it, then format it.

How would I get them onto the external hard drive tho?

take old hard drive out of old PC, and buy an external hard drive case, about £10.

put old hard drive in there, use as an external drive , and you still have access to it.

remember you will be booting from new PC , so old hard drive is not needed.

Or put old hard drive inside new PC and set as a slave,

How Do I Do a "Repair Installation"?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Ok, have you tried downloading and then booting from a Windows PE Mini CD Edition (live CD)?

If not, then do a search on a torrent search engine and download. Once burned to CD, you can boot from it. It's a mini version of XP that runs from CD. You can use Windows Explorer the normal way to copy your important files to a USB memory stick. They are doing an 8GB USB Stick at Tesco for £15: Technika 8GB Flash Drive - Tesco.Direct
