I cant believe people want teachers to be armed.
God almighty. They are teachers of young children, not the armed forces.
Our world might have well have ended today if arming teachers is a way forward.
I honestly cant believe the mentality of people.
No wonder the human race is fcked. We wont be happy till we have killed it.
It would have reduced his capacity to maim and murder but it wont stop him from being crazy.......if he intended to cause mayhem then he would use a different method...knives, bows, baseball bats, a can of petrol and a lighter....even IED'S - anyone with a computer connected to the net can learn how to make an explosive device in their kitchen.....as i said criminals dont adhere to laws....taking guns from law abiding citizens further exposes the general population to more carnage.....they need to change the application process to a similar one in Ireland or England..weed out the loonies by stringent checks and have routine security checks to see if storage is safe etc.....but no, taking all the LEGAL guns off people is wrong...guns are not the problem, people and society are....just my two cents.

I was referring to a hypothetical situation....if a gun yielding maniac is confronted by an armed person then the situation changes to a level peg...and yes some schools do have armed staff and without them the students would be in real danger.....try Israel for one....i dont advocate arming teachers in the classroom and certainly not in Ireland, but an armed staff member with a sidearm concealed in a safe but accessible locker would ensure some degree of security to these types of situation.

You can't uninvent guns, or arm the world...
What needs to be done is stop glamorising firearms in the first place, here in the UK 99% of imported tv programmes have gun play! The kids of my era aspired to new shoes and a bike !, now you're not a "man" unless you are armed... Its a cultural change we need.

'Where do the majority of firearms that criminals seem to be able to obtain actually come from in the first place, they must have surely been purchased and owned legally at some point.... Or do the criminals and non-legal owners manufacture them themselves. '
The guns used by criminals in Ireland are generaly not the type available to the public....9mm and 45's in handguns and fully auto weapons....these are imported illegaly from eastern europe....we have stringent gun control in Ireland and dont have access to some calibre and gun types available in America....but we dont have an all out ban on guns either...our system works....primarily the wait period is anything from 1 week to 3 months for a license, then you need to show the storage facility for your guns is up to a high standard....then you need to pass security checks including a doctors report if need be....then in the case of handguns and high powered and centre fire rifles over .22 you need to proved is it appropiate and fit for purpose....ie you need to spend 600 euros on range membership before you get a license for a handgun....you cant walk around with it in public....it must be transported in a secure manner...then after three years you must reapply following the whole process again to keep your guns......hence this is why lunatics dont go on killing sprees here.....but we still have guns

And there has been absolutley no gun crime in the UK since..............and i will go blue in the face telling people criminals and nutjobs do not concede to stringent gun legislation....they will find other ways to carry out their evil deeds....gun toting criminals dont go to their local gunshop and legaly purchase a gun for criminal use
.....they get them from sources elsewhere...usualy eastern europe....these firearms were never registered in the uk for civilian use....they are cheap and readily available...in Ireland its easier and quicker to buy a handgun illegaly in Limerick city than it is to get a pizza delivered.....these are illegaly imported weapons not stolen from genuine gun owners...gun laws wont stop this sort of crime....stringent and proactive policing of criminal gangs will. In the mean time genuine sports men and women are criminalised for gun ownership....what next??? take all the knives. baseball bats, hurleys etc from people because they have been used in violent crime...eventualy we must recognise that a happy medium must be struck....the all or nothing approach never works.

A lot of these illegal guns knocking around have been taken from legal places during thefts etc. Criminals don't care where they get weapons from and will even take them from others. Why give them a easy supply chain ?![]()
That was the case up to ten years ago.....now the criminals have glocks and sub machine guns and even RPG'S reportedley....all 'imported' illegaly from eastern europe and cheap as chips aswell....alot more 'gangsta' looking packing a 9mm than a 12g shottie......with the advent of secure storage as a requirement for a license, theft of legaly held firearms has dropped significantly in Ireland....so no, if you take guns from legaly licensed civilians you won't cut the supply chain.....demand will be fulfilled by other routes of supply.....as i said, criminals dont adhere to gun laws..PERIOD....more effective policing is what is needed.

As has been pointed out, it's more about having an armed member of staff, not specifically a teacher.
Inner city schools in the US have armed security guards & metal detectors. This isn't to stop maniacs on a rampage, it's to try & stop gang shootings within the school.
I've also seen panic strips in classrooms. These are the same as is found in interview rooms in police stations. If a pupil gets out of hand the teacher, or another pupil, can hit the strip & get security backup within a minute.
Here's a well structured & balanced reply from another site...
Full articleWhile we do what we can to do the impossible of preventing guns from ending up in the wrong hands, we really should revisit the cost cutting measures of the Reagan administration that eviscerated mental health services and halfway houses and left dealing with the mentally ill, more or less, to the criminal justice system.
Based on things said to his psychiatrist, the Aurora movie theater shooter should have been poster boy for the baker act, but patient confidentiality and the real obstacles in having someone involuntarily pushed into our now mostly non-existent mental health services made doing anything preventative almost impossible.
It’s very true that someone with a gun can kill a lot more people than someone with a knife, but as we saw in China recently, people with knives can go on rampages. Which then brings to mind the nature of “acceptable losses”. When it’s you, your kid and someone you know even a knifing isn’t acceptable.
Recently I watched one of Candice DeLong’s “Facing Evil” programs that profiled a teenage girl who, over a boy, got into an escalating social media feud with another girl that ended with one stabbed to death and the other facing a 27 year sentence. This doesn’t seem to me to have been a problem with serrated kitchen knives. The girl convicted had a history of attention-seeking behavior including pulling a knife during a family dispute, but it was never addressed as to “get help” invariably means calling the police.
We are an increasingly stressed society containing people with any number of personality disorders and lack of coping skills. Regulating firearms is one answer, but unless we can accurately predict behavior, then whatever we put in place wouldn’t stop a 20 year old with no criminal record and who was apparently never involved in any counseling.

The US school children didnt make that choice though... In this country our social services remove children from harmful or dangerous environments, to protect them. In the US the innocent poor kids are born, raised and have to live within such a screwed up culture. So, even if its not the country we live in, forgive the few of us who speak out on behalf of these innocents who do have to live there.
