Hi,
Does the engine actually misfire???
have you done comp test?
has it got the correct engine oil?
have you cleared the code or looked at freeze frame data?.
go all through basics,air leaks,spray test,etc.
If all else fails, save freeze frame and clear dtc.

Hope helps.

Hi carl, thanks for your reply.

The engine does actually misfire, and smells rich from the exhaust, on tickover, sounds like a popping sound comes from the exhaust.

Its got the correct oil.

Done a dtc test myself with an elm327 interface where the code p0301 was listed.

Dont know how to freeze frame ata as it was the first time i had used the interface.

did clear the fault code ok but it was back on within 3 miles.

Cant find any air leaks but have not doen a spray test.

Hope this sheds alittle more light on what may be happening.

Again, thanks for your help.

hi,
ok, the way i would handle this.
eliminate the mechanical side first,if you arnt too shure about eletronics.
compression test all cyls first:this will tell you if the engine is physically able to run correctly on that cyl.
if the compression is low you will know if it is a mechanical problem rather than electronic.

as for freeze frame data, it is logged by the on board computer at the moment the dtc was flagged, depending on the system itncan be quite usefull as a guide to what is going on.

my golden rule is get down to basics first, rather than random testing.
