Tobacco products must stay hidden in closed cupboards or be kept under shop counters under the extension of England’s tough antismoking laws.
The reforms require all large shops and supermarkets to scrap displays at the point of sale with only temporary displays in ''certain limited circumstances'' to be allowed.
The ban’s introduction was delayed until April 2015 for smaller newsagents and tobacconists in order to allow them time to refit their shops.
Ministers argue removing tobacco from sight will help discourage young people from taking up smoking.
But critics claimed the new laws, announced on No Smoking Day last year, smacked of the nanny state and would increase the burden on shopkeepers
Only a handful of countries have introduced similar laws including Ireland, Iceland, Norway and Thailand.

Another Govt taking control of humans by force.
If that was to stop children smoking why children’s are taking drugs when they are had to get in the open market??????????
I think they will now gradually start telling supermarket not to sell alcohol.
This state of ours is now going to be like Saudi Arabia and there is nothing you can do about it………..

Agreed gmb45, only thing I am worried that more children will be paying double ££££££££ to buy cigarettes from older people.
The only thing our Govt should encourage children to stop is gambling, at present children can gamble on line and scratch cards.

its a sad world we live in,the law in this country is actualy putting kids in danger,i have wanted to call the police on a few occasions,i know of one 14 year old gave an adult £10 to get her 20 cigs and a bottle of wine,he told her to wait round the corner out of cctv range,he came back out shop and did a runner with her money,i myself have been put in a position a couple of times along at the corner shop,by young girls offering small favours if i buy them cigs or drink, they dont know the danger they can get in,when you tell them no,all you get is abuse, the mouths they have are unreal, cant call the police, because of the hastle it would cause,in the eyes of the law i would be in wrong cause i am an adult, got to the stage if i see kids at shop standing,i just go back in my gate, shop is only 150 yds along road.
Well anything that's keeps them away from the eyes of kids is ok by me. A dirty filthy disgusting habit. Best thing that the Scottish parliament done was to outlaw smoking in indoor public places.
yes it may stop kids seeing in shops, but they will still see parents,uncles/aunts etc etc smoking, plus on the other side, kids will see more empty pkts lying on pavements etc, than they will see in a corner shop.so it wont work, they know cigs are still in shop.i say the same about drinking,i dont drink, nothing worse than someone getting on a bus stinking of drink breath, bogging.even walking past a pub, smell the drink flowing out door, yuk.one thing about smokers, they are stopping your income tax shooting sky high,£4.20 tax on pkt of 20.always said and always will say,i aint gonna kill a kid driving a car with cig smoke in me,but drink will.drink is now proven to be a bigger killer than cigs.
I thought they ran out of anti laws………
What makes me think is there any other laws left not been passed in the parliament we know about to come into force in the near future?

Hell, I don't smoke & these new laws even pizzed me off.
Went to tesco & couldn't see anything, no packets or prices. How am I supposed to laugh at the prices my friends pay when I can't see them?

This was brought in in Ireland a few years ago and did nothing to cut down on smokers young or old.
Another brain ball idea was to do away with 10 packs so to make it harder for kids to buy 20 because of the price difference. So far that hasn't happened.
In the end, the tobacco companies will have the last say where laws are concerned having most governments in their pocket.
So the anti-smoking nazi's have got their own way again.

I don't see the point, when I started smoking in my teens, I didn't buy a packet of cigs because of the design or the colour of the box,
I bought the packet that was the cheapest.
