Motorola has been rapped by the advertising watchdog for misleading claims that a mobile phone was "pool party proof", "dance floor proof" and "life proof".

The company billed its DEFY model as "water resistant scratch resistant dust proof" in one television advert while another showed the device falling to the ground in a nightclub.

But three customers complained, saying the screens cracked when they accidentally dropped their phones.

The company has now been ordered to axe the adverts and warned not to exaggerate the performance of its products.

The DEFY campaign, broadcast in April, showed Motorola's products being used in different scenarios which included it hitting the ground in a club. Text on screen stated: "DANCE FLOOR PROOF".

Footage of a pool party was accompanied by the text: "POOL PARTY PROOF".

The phone also appeared on a pavement next to a broken pot in the aftermath of festivities. Text stated: "It's life proof".

The Advertising Standards Watchdog (ASA) was brought in after complainants challenged whether the adverts misleadingly exaggerated the durability of the mobile phone.

It concluded the advertisements suggested the phone would not be damaged when it was dropped from the height shown and upheld the complaints.
