Notorious villain Ronnie Kray as you've never seen him before
He still looks menacing despite the pudgy face and crooked tie. But Ronnie Kray knows his life of violent crime is over as he holds up his prison number in this previously unseen
It was one of three taken on July 4, 1969, after the gangster arrived at Durham prison. They were found recently in a box during an office move at the headquarters of Durham Constabulary.
The photographs were attached to Kray’s police file which gives a fascinating insight into the life of the notorious villain who with his twin brother Reggie ran a criminal gang in the East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s.
More than 40 years after he was jailed, Ronnie Kray's criminal record has been discovered gathering dust in a police headquartersRONNIE KRAY'S CRIMINAL RECORD

Kray was 35 when he was sent to Durham as prisoner 058110 four months after he was convicted of murdering George Cornell and Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie.
The file, which details his criminal record from the age of 17, begins: ‘Ronald Kray has been the leader of a ruthless and terrible gang for a number of years.
‘He has strong homosexual tendencies and an uncontrollable temper and has been able to generate terror not only in the lesser minions of his gang, but also in the close and trusted members.
‘He would brook no incompetence or interference from anyone and was very conscious not only of his own public image but also that of his underlings.
‘For this reason he used to like to set an example and enjoyed the name of “the Colonel” amongst his subordinates.’
It added that he was ‘extremely violent’ and ‘will not hesitate to kill in any circumstances’. The file goes on to list his occupations as club owner, labourer, dog breeder, billiard hall keeper, wardrobe dealer and soldier.
It covers his recruitment into the Royal Fusiliers at the Tower of London in 1952 and his desertion after less than five months.
He is described as ‘5ft 7.5in tall with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair’. A section on ‘peculiarities’ notes that his ‘eyebrows meet over nose’.
The file, from the then North Eastern Criminal Record Office, goes on to list his occupations as 'club owner, labourer, dog breeder, billiard hall keeper, wardrobe dealer and soldier'
Ronnie Kray and Reggie (right) have a cup of tea after being questioned by detectives in 1966 about the murder of George Cornell. Three years later, Reggie was convicted of the killing
The Krays once tried to infiltrate Newcastle’s clubland and the report confirms that they ‘visited Newcastle in 1966, thought to be on reconnaissance visits to Manchester and Tyneside’.
But it adds: ‘They behaved themselves and moved off.’
The Durham force hopes to find a suitable home for the file, possibly in a museum. The Krays were convicted of stabbing to death fellow gangster Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie and sentenced to life. He apparently owed them money.
Ronnie was also convicted of shooting dead Cornell for calling him a ‘fat poof’. He was eventually sent to Broadmoor and died in 1995. Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in 2000 with terminal cancer. He died a month later.
