Performance artist gives birth to baby boy in art gallery filled with strangers

A performance artist has given birth to a baby boy – in front of an audience at a gallery.

Marni Kotak delivered her son on Tuesday morning in a steaming birthing pool surrounded by family, friends – and total strangers.

The 36-year-old earlier described giving birth as the ‘highest form of art’. The baby weighed in at 4.1kg (9lb 2oz) and is believed to have been named Ajax.

The performance was called The Birth of Baby X, with visitors to the Microscope Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, warned it could happen at any moment.

Katarina Hybenova, editor of the Bushwick Daily website, was among those invited to the event.

‘The atmosphere in the gallery was magical,’ she said.

‘I believe that all of the participants were deeply moved by this emotional, raw and true piece of art. I feel like the entire audience accomplished this together with Marni, using the commonly created positive energy.’

Araceli Cruz, of the Village Voice website, arrived shortly after the birth to find Kotak ‘calmly eating a banana’ with her ‘wide-eyed beautiful baby boy’ staring at camera lenses.

The gallery is now expected to show a video of the birth for the rest of the exhibition, which is due to run until November 7.

Meanwhile Kotak plans to start the next stage of her performance, Raising Baby X.

‘The long-term project will ultimately encompass the span of the child’s life through to attending college and developing an independent life,’ she said.
