Workers ... Corrie's Webster family
THEY are two TV families who represent Britain's shocking economic divide. While Coronation Street's GRAFTING Websters pump thousands into the system through taxes, the GRASPING Gallaghers from Channel 4's Shameless have enjoyed a free ride during the 13 years under Labour. A Sun probe has revealed it takes the taxes of THREE hard-working families such as the Websters to cover the benefits sponged by just ONE Shameless family. Since Labour came to power in 1997, idle alcoholic Frank would have cost British taxpayers more than £310,000 - almost £24,000 A YEAR - to support his brood without putting in a day's work. While Corrie's hard-working mechanic Kevin and his conscientious clan would have coughed up more than £130,000 in taxes, national insurance and rates. MIKE RIDLEY has a look at their real-world finances.
The Websters give £133,014
THE WEBSTERS live at No 4 Coronation Street and 44-year-old Kevin is a partner at Webster's Auto Centre Wife Sally, 43, works as a machinist at undies factory Underworld, where daughter Rosie, 19, is a PA. Younger daughter Sophie, 15, is still at school.
Sally and Kevin split up in 1997 before remarrying in 2002.
Kevin earns £30,000 a year as a self-employed mechanic in partnership with Tyrone Dobbs.
Sally is paid £15,000 a year as a skilled worker. Rosie went to work at Underworld aged 17 and earns around £15,000.
Over the past 13 years, the family would have paid a total of £76,410 in income tax, made up of £51,925 from Kevin, £19,125 from Sally and £5,360 from Rosie.
They would have also paid, respectively, £27,057, £10,957 and £3,148 - a total of £41,162 - in national insurance.
National Insurance has risen from ten per cent to 11 per cent in 13 years.
Like all homeowners, the Websters also pay council tax - and the Labour council of Salford, which the fictitious Weatherfield is based on, has seen council tax for a small terrace house rise by 62 per cent in 13 years, from £680 annually to more than £1,100.
The Websters lived in a two-up, two-down terrace at No13 from 1997 until two years ago when they swapped to the smart, more modern No4.
In those 13 years they would have paid £13,849 council tax. Britain has the highest fuel duty in Europe. In 13 years tax on a litre of fuel has risen 55 per cent, from 37p to a whopping 57p. Filling up the tank on an average car hands the Government £31 in tax - £11 MORE than in 1997.
That means an average family, such as the Websters, would have spent £8,900 in tax on their petrol and diesel since 1997.
As the co-owner of a small garage, Kevin pays business rates - another tax - which are collected by the local council but handed straight to Whitehall.
We calculate Webster's Auto Centre will have paid more than £8,650 in business rates in 13 years, due to them almost DOUBLING in the North West under Labour.
When Labour came to power the Websters had two children aged six and under. The family would have received just £15,957 in state help through child benefits.
The Gallaghers take £310,698
THE GALLAGHER family, of the Chatsworth Estate in Stretford, Manchester, is headed by Vernon Francis "Frank" Gallagher, who is addicted to alcohol and benefits.
When Labour came to power in 1997 he and wife Monica received benefits for six children - Fiona, Phillip (Lip), Debbie, Ian, Carl and Liam.
Benefits ... Shameless' Gallagher family
Monica left home in 2004 when Frank, 50, moved in with next-door neighbour, Sheila Jackson - who is also on benefits. In 2005, Sheila gave birth to their twins, Delia and Nigel.
Then when Monica returned a couple of years later, Frank fathered baby Stella.
Frank's idleness and his tangled love life have been supported by the state to the tune of £310,698 in the 13 years since Labour took office.
The alcoholic layabout and his various partners and kids would have pocketed £117,520 in incapacity benefit.
There are 800,000 like Frank Gallagher who have claimed the benefit for ten years or more.
Housing benefit covers the Gallaghers' rent and council tax. The Chatsworth Estate is in Stretford, where if the Gallaghers were working they would have paid nearly £10,000 in council tax.
Instead, the taxpayer has had to fork out almost £85,906 in housing benefit to keep the Shameless family in their council house throughout Labour's three terms.
On some estates, four out of five families claim housing benefits.
Child tax credits, introduced in 2003 and designed to help low-earning families, are also given to out-of-work families with kids.
The Gallaghers would have claimed £66,520 in child tax credits since they were brought in.
Our calculations show the Gallaghers would have received £40,752 in child benefits for their large brood.
Parents now receive £20.30 a week for the first child and £13.40 for all children of school age.

The United Kingdom...................where laziness is rewarded and hard work is penilzed!!!!! pure and simple. When i walk to the bank each week to pay money in. to cover my taxes so these scumbags can sit around get pissed in pubs is really a hard pill to swallow.
it really pisses me off too...... I pay about 900 quid a month for tax and NI....... but..... you cant blame the people fully for this problem. If they are given this ammount of money where is the incentive to get off their asses and get a job?
Get rid of money and give them "Economic support" vouchers which they can use at supermarkets to buy food / clothes ... no alcohol or tobacco....give them a reason to go find a job?
