Default BT to turn cashpoints into Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots

Better chance of picking up a Wi-Fi signal, but it will cost you.

BT has hooked up with Cashbox and is preparing to add 2,500 Wi-Fi hotsports to its Openzone roaming service using cash machines across the UK.

The Openzone service, which is mostly found in pubs, restaurants, airports and train stations, will still be free to use for the one million Apple iPhone users, with BT Home Broadband customers receiving bundled in roaming Wi-Fi minutes on their accounts.

However if you're not in one of those elite groups, it's likely you'll have little money to redeem from the cashpoint if you wish to use the service. Using the Wi-Fi for just 90 minutes will cost £5.88, with a full day's surfing at £9.99.

The service will be trialed using 10 ATM machines before being rolled out nationwide should the scheme prove a success.
