E71 error after X Clamp Fix

Just fixed a rrod with a kit for the x clamps from ebay.
All was fine, COD 3 for half an hour with no issues.

Then went on line and after 10 min screen froze, error message E71.
Done a bit of searching on line, tried holding down Sync when you boot to clear system cache and clearing with a code on the system/memory tab on the dashboard. Both methods did not work.

Then I found a post on xbox hacker from a guy who said he had solved the problem by installing the latest dashboard via a usb drive.

I found and downloaded 2.0.8955.0.rar. This is the version shown on the dashboard.

Now is it just a case of putting this on a usb stick and re-booting the xbox, or is there a little more to it ? Should i unzip the files?
Do i need to set the unit to boot from usb like I would in the bios of a pc ?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Unzip the file and format your usb stick to FAT 32.

Move the files over to the usb Stick.

Insert the usb into the xbox and turn on. The update should start automatically.

        Well it don't look good.

The Xbox is not reacting any way to the USB stick.
I have tried all 3 USB ports, keeping the files in the folder, copying the files to the root of the stick, burning to a CD (both in folder and in root) even tried two different sticks, both with Fat 32 and NFTS formating.

I have tried the latest version 2.0.8955.0 and also tried to roll back to 2.0.8498.0.

        I think I have a paperweight !!

Any last suggestions before my patience gives up and I revert to Myth-buster tactics?
