    giving to charities at Christmas

I normally give some money to charity at Christmas.

We were talking about it in the shoutbox tonight and I thought this year Instead of buying a goat or digging a well, that I might give to a cause a little closer to home.

so this year I have decided to give some money to helping out the haggis. With all the bad weather we have been having here in Scotland it has been a bad year so far for the haggis and they have been finding it very difficult to find food. My husband is particulary fond of balmoral haggis, which I think is from the balmoral estate where the queen spends the summer.. they are fed on a special diet of fermented barley.

this is a picture below.. it does not really show you it properly as the legs on one side of it's body are a little shorter than the other... due to the hills.

If you want to know more about haggis and you stay near kelvingrove museum then pop in and have a look there as they have one on display

I know it does not look very remarkable but I think it is important to look after the native species of animal.. so this year the haggis gets my money!!

Well with a hair style like that would suspect it don't have a lot of street cred so it will properbly be hiding or hibernating.

What times of year are they seen normally?

Would guess if you stick a garden fork in the ground enough times you will find one on the end of it?

        Off to bed nite nite.

        Meat.

          night night meatie.. sleep well

I think they tend to semi-hibernate in the winter.. only appearing in times of real need.. I think you're suggestion of forking may be a bit premature

See there's a misconception about Haggis, people think that the severe cold kills them off, nothing is further from the truth! it merely kills off the PREDATORS that plague the timid haggis.

Come summer there will need to be a cull because they'll be everywhere and with less natural predators the high streets will be overrun!

I know what you are saying Chroma but last year was a tough cold snowy one too and the poor wee beasties had a real hard time of it.. this year looks like being the same. Then there is burns night.. well we need good few hundred for that and supplies are still short from last year..

The main predator of the Haggis is the Deep Fat Fryer.. ~~~~in well nice deep fried haggis, chips n curry sauce.. Also good as a replacement for black pudding on the breakfast plate..

It's a good cause Dreamer. They are a strange Animal and need protecting.

I saw one last year when I was working in Brigadoon.

Course there is, the NWO is just good at "Hiding" it from the public.

They have 4 legs coincidentally, mountain dwellers predominantly and have evolved on the terrain by growing one set of legs shorter than the others allows them to run around mountain tops faster than predators.
On the lowlands and valleys theyre useless however as the ambulatory imbalance causes them to veer from straight lines and run in more circular patterns.
this accounts for a lot of lowland crop fields where haggis desperately try to evade predation.

Ha you say that!! Just becuase they are difficult to see and catch does not mean that they do not exist!!

yes the first of the new season are always caught just before burns night. although they are less active over winter they always appear in plenty of time so that the locals can enjoy freshly caught haggis rather than the frozen stuff often seen in shops. Looks like numbers have recovered from last year as there was no problems catching a good batch this year.

I see like myself you are a fan of the haggi. It's nice to have some likeminded members on the forum who appreciate what a unique little animal the haggi are
