The minimum wage is going up by 15p in October. The Government's announced it's rising to ?6.08 an hour. It says the increase will benefit almost 1 million workers. Thoughts on this?
15p rise per hour in your wages

Hope they off set that figure with the amount that will be made redundant because the employers cannot afford to pay them.
If sales continue to fall, as they have been, how do the government propose employers meet this higher wage bill?Canker

as ever its swings and roundabouts for some the minimum wage was a great thing to be introduced for some employers it didnt help becuse they were getting 2 people for the price of 1
i remember not so long before it came in some employers were paying just over ?2 per hour which was ridiculously low
it has weasled these greedy employers out granted there was a few losses but not on the scale of what the employers were saying would happen
a boost to the minimum wage also means thet the government will actually pay slightly less to low income families in tax credits and housing benefit
i am pro minimum wage as it also tends to push peoples wage up who are just over the minumum so their employers dont look so greedy too
granted there may be a few losses on the way put if people have more money they tend to spend moreComment

wont effect us at all at work as our starting wage is ?6.30 for general operatives with no experience on qualifications.
Some companies link it so every time the min wage goes up your wage rises also , but not the one i work for,
It means in reality the gap is closing .
Last year we paid ?6.50 for seasonal ops, so in real terms the recession and fuel prices are driving wages down.
I personally cost my Employer ?300 a week in fuel and it can only continue to rise.
The only way to balance the books and still return a profit is to cut the wage bill.
Returning a healthy profit margin pays for the fuel , general overheads, wage bill etc.
No profit = Going bust = No employent = Noboby wins!Comment

well if minimum wage gos up next year again you might just see a wage rise then
fuel is the same for everyone as is minimum wage if your boss is keeping prices as low as possible to keep jobs how could anyone do it cheaper than him
he would be paying same fuel and same wage costs as a rival
so if your boss loses his contracts it is because either his service is 5hit,he makes something no one wants or needs or because he makes more than he likes his employees to knowComment

companies aren't stupid, they will find ways around it,
like the company who my partner works for, she works 12 hour shifts, and gets paid for her lunch hour,
they have just been told they are getting a 40p an hour pay rise, but,
they are loosing there "paid" lunch break, so in fact she will be ?32 a month worse off, after a pay rise.
so please dont feel sorry for the private sector, they've been getting away with low pay rates for years.!retupmoc eht ni deppart m'I !pleHComment
