A former personal assistant to Rebekah Brooks has been arrested in phone hacking investigations, on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Cheryl Carter, 47, is understood to have been arrested at her home in Essex, becoming the 17th person to be detained as part of the Met?s Operation Weeting.
Ms Carter worked under former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks for 19 years, at both ?The Sun? and ?The News of the World? until Brooks resigned in July 2011 over allegations of phone hacking.
Ms Carter has also worked as beauty editor at ?The Sun?. She is being held at an Essex police station after the arrest at 06.55 on Friday morning.
Operation Weeting was set up in January 2011 to investigate phone hacking on Fleet Street. A number of 'News of the World' journalists have been arrested as part of the investigations, including editor Andy Coulson and royal editor Clive Goodman.
The operation is being run alongside Operation Elvedon which is looking into inappropriate payments made to police. Ms Carter?s arrest comes days before the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics resumes following the Christmas break.
