    Police condemn 147mph Jaguar driver

A police sergeant who caught a pensioner driving a luxury car at 147mph on a bypass has described the incident as "the worst case of excessive speed I have ever seen in 26 years of policing".

Company director Owen Swift, 68, was clocked travelling at more than twice the speed limit in his Jaguar XKR on the Malton bypass, in North Yorkshire, on the evening of June 11 last year.

He was caught by Traffic Sergeant John Clayton using a laser speed gun.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed Swift was found guilty of speeding at Scarborough was not the driver of the car was rejected.

A force spokeswoman said he was fined ?700, ordered to pay ?650 costs and an admin fee of ?15.

He received six penalty points which were added to six points already on his licence and he was therefore disqualified from driving for nine months under the "totting" rules.

Speaking after the case, Mr Clayton said: "This is the worst case of excessive speed I have ever seen in 26 years of policing.

"Swift's disregard for his own safety and the safety of other road users beggars belief.

"The potential consequences of such shocking driving do not bear thinking about.

"I have seen first-hand the destruction caused by excessive speed. Swift should consider himself extremely lucky to be here to face the court and walk away with just a ban and a fine."

Different story when the traffic cop was caught doing over 150mph while familiarising himself with his new cop car a couple of years back...he just got off with it

What do you expect cops can do what they like.

Exactly mate. Nobody worse than the police themselves.

Every year people are killed and injured by speeding police vehicles with few,if any, prosecutions of the offending drivers. I have personally witnessed police patrol cars being driven,in suburban environments,at such insane speed that any civilian caught doing the same would, most certainly,be banned or jailed.
They're nothing but fcking two faced hypocrites.

Except when they are racing to your home to save you from some nutter trying to stab you or rape your wife, or should they stick to the speed limit and then get there just too late.

If he had claimed that without his car for transport the business would be at risk of collapsing. He would probably of kept his license at the cost of a bigger fine.

I am aware of a driver that has a sales & marketing business. He has over 20 points on his license, all from speeding, but still has his license. All based on the above defense.

It can be done, you just need to know how.

Right I am not the biggest fan of the police but what speed the police drive at is irrelevant.

He was a danger to himself and most importantly others, he could have easily been the death of himself and other folk.

I was reffering to the pensioner doing 147mph. Was sticking to the first post.

A police officer off duty doing speeds like that should receive the same punishment and his position as a police officer should at least be questioned.

A member gets banned off here, to get back on you have to pay admin a fee.
