I thought we had no money??

So what the hell is this all about?

Give Queen a new royal yacht for diamond jubilee, says Michael Gove

    Exclusive:
Education secretary proposes taxpayers fund gift ? likely to cost at least ?60m ? to mark 'momentous occasion'

    Michael Gove
has brushed aside Britain's economic problems to propose the public donate a new royal yacht to the Queen as a mark of respect during this year's diamond jubilee celebrations, according to a confidential letter to fellow ministers.
In the letter, which has been sent to Jeremy Hunt, the culture secretary and minister overseeing the celebrations, and to the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, Gove at one point comes close to suggesting that Britain's dire economic climate means that a large-scale celebration is required to lift the country's spirits.
The education secretary writes: "In spite, and perhaps because of the austere times, the celebration should go beyond those of previous jubilees and mark the greater achievement that the diamond anniversary represents."
The Liberal Democrats privately expressed surprise at the proposal, which is likely to cost at least ?60m, at a time of national austerity.
Meanwhile Tom Watson, the Labour party vice-chairman, said: "When school budgets are being slashed, parents will be wondering how Gove came even to suggest this idea."
Gove, an enthusiastic monarchist, writes in the letter: "I feel strongly that the diamond jubilee gives us a tremendous opportunity to recognise in a very fitting way the Queen's highly significant contribution to the life of the nation and the Commonwealth."
Commenting on draft celebration proposals prepared by Hunt, Gove expresses his reservations at a lack of ambition, saying: "I feel strongly more should be done to achieve a longer lasting legacy. Events such as proms and the party at the palace organised for the diamond jubilee, and street parties, although excellent, are transient. It would be appropriate to do something that will mark the significance of this occasion with fitting ceremony.
"My suggestion would be a gift from the nation to her majesty; thinking about David Willetts's excellent suggestion of a royal yacht, and something tangible to commemorate this momentous occasion." He adds: "The year ahead provides an enormous opportunity to showcase the very best of Britain."
Hinting at cabinet tensions over the way in which the culture department is focusing so heavily on the Olympics in the year of the jubilee, Gove says: "The diamond jubilee must not be overshadowed by the Olympic Games, but form an integral part of this great year for our country."
Some of Gove's extravagant language reveals the difficulties created for politicians by the coincidence of the jubilee and the Olympics, alongside forecasts that the UK economy will slip back into recession this year and see a further severe squeeze on living standards. Labour will be watching for any sign the national celebrations are used by the government to distract from the state of the economy.
Gove ends his letter by suggesting that if insufficient taxpayer funds are available a private donation could be sought, before making a naked departmental bid for every schoolchild or school to be given a gift as a permanent reminder of the event. Gove's office confirmed the authenticity of the letter but refused to comment.
The royal yacht Britannia was decommissioned by the Labour government in December 1997 and became a visitor attraction in Edinburgh. It was last seen listing after a leak during repairs over the New Year holiday.
Various efforts have been made to propose a new royal yacht, but have been rejected on the grounds of cost, estimated in 1997 at ?60m. However, during the June celebrations a luxury cruiser boat, the Spirit of Chartwell, which is already being dressed up as a royal barge, will carry the Queen along the Thames as part of a pageant

Old people are dying every year through not being able to afford to heat their homes, the NHS is a shambles, the armed forces are being screwed over etc etc etc etc etc yet we have to buy a rich old woman a yacht????

    Jubilee my arse.

She committed high treason by breaking her coronation oath when she signed our country away to the EU. The Lisbon Treaty abolished Britain on 1st January 2009, therefore Elizabeth is no longer queen, just a very rich criminal.

If we are all going to suffer from Government cuts, there shouldn't be exceptions.
Talk about double standards. We give a family ?10,000 of taxpayer's money to live off of for a year and they're branded "benefits scum"... even if they slog their guts out for 40 hours a week.

Give a family a few ?million of taxpayers money to live off of for a year and they're hailed as an institution.

    Bollocks.

This is exactly why I hate the Royal Family. Why should we pay for there luxury.

Once apon a time there was a purpose to a Royal Family now they do nothing. They are just as bad as dole scroungers in my eyes. What a complete joke when you think of all the good purposes that money could be used for.

Time for them to ~~~~ off!!

p.s. the celebrations will cost enough as it is now they want to give her a bloody yaht. I know what id give her!

The Royal Family MAKE money for the uk in tourism, they are actually a nice little earner for us, as they make more than they cost.

Hardly that great though as there spending that money brought in from tourists.

I bet if the royal family was to be no more tourists would still flock to the UK. Even still to see the Palace and so on.

I have no time for them at all and the UK would not fall apart without them.

Royal family no more. Surely we would knock all the palaces down and build houses for the immigrants then?

Any revenue brought in profit due to the royal family is a bonus.

Why would the Americans and Chinese want to come to look at skyscrapers full of immigrants from other country's?

Keep the palaces they would still be history and tell the story of our past (a past that once apon a time we did not have a scrounging royal family)

Theres people that go to London etc each year on holiday and are not there for the royal family? Yet I bet that tourism is accounted for when they create there statistics.

Why should I have to work to buy her a bloody yaht she has done not a thing for me she sits there spending it yet she cant even crack a smile.

While I have to pay my bills they get a bill free lifestyle. While people are homeless they get housed for nothing, while the general public at a time like this need to constantly watch there outgoings they dont have a care in the world.

Other countries have actually built there economy by creating tourism. If there was no royal family we could easily do the same on our past history and new ventures.

What really winds me up is that she is not even a nice person she looks down on people. The way she looks at some people is a complete and utter disgrace. Also she has all that tax payers money yet she never smiles. While she's spending my earnings she cant even crack a little smile

Id be more concerned about the amount of immigrants on benefits and continuing to bring more of they're families over here to get housing and benefits. The royal family wont go away and the more we rattle on about it and forget about the immigrants the worse its going to get.

The only thing left that resembles britain now is the royal family and the palaces. What else shouts out BRITAIN. Certainly not Birmingham or bradford.

I'd chip in to buy her a boat if she'd take some of her extended family and arse kissers with her. I don't buy the Royal Family bringing more into the country than they cost. It's not as if many tourists pop into Madgies house for a coffee with her. The spongers have more houses than they know what to do with. I'd love to be on their money to sit on my arse and wave at people now and again.

As for being British they're a bunch of inbred mongrels with more german in them than a Volkswagen.
