Older macs have different cpu's(Power PC) than newer "Intel" cpu macs, Power PC macs only support up to OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. and depending on cpu speed also it may only run 10.4 Tiger. I think its atleast 800mhz needed to install Leopard on Power PC macs. There are hacks to get Leopard on slower rated cpu speeds though.
G3, G4, and most G5 macs are all Power PC, so basically you're limited to Leopard.
