Advice re: protection on new Plasma TV

    Hi folks,

hope yous all had a good Christmas.

I wanted some advice regarding protection on my new 50 inch Plasma TV.

I bought a new TV and was sold the Whatever Happens Premier protection (It was really a misold and a complete joke but hey..).

I was wondering as the product comes with the 12 month warranty, is there any need to get the protection?

I was thinking of the three options:

Option 1 - wait till Nov 2013 (a month before the manufacture's warranty) and call again to setup?

Option 2 - contact Domestic & General directly and get Multicover plan that would also cover my washing machine and say fridge?

Option 3 - Don't bother with the protection at all?

Please advise guys, would really appreciate your help.

Domestic and general want about ?109 a year. If you didn't take it and your TV lasted 3 years you'd have ?327 in your pocket, enough for another one to replace it anyway. depends whether you think you'll have the money in your hand to buy a new one if the worst should happen. I don't get the extended warranties because generally things tend to last a lot longer than they used to be. Insurance companies are in the market to make a profit, why would they sell you an extended warranty if they expected to lose money?

as i am not in the uk and understand how their warranty works, but here i think you have 30 days to increase it if viable.
how old is washing machine and fridge to take that also into account as if new, doubt it if needed but if 8-10 yrs maybe end of life next?

my local did electrical sold me a warranty on a frying pan

You bought your Telly from Currys, so you probably paid over the odds for it already, and their extended warranty cover prices are really quite expensive too. Shop around and see what comparable cover you can get elsewhere, you're bound to find summat much cheaper...

TBH I agree with you. Never bought any warranties in my life and just because the liar salesman at Curry's added it, I was wondering if its worth before I cancel it as I get the 14 day cooling off period.

Another reason of considering it was because its a Plasma and they are known not to last as much as LED's or LCD's

I got a 50" Plasma TV exactly 2 years a go now a Panasonic one luckily for me it had 5 years free warranty a lot of places offer it now, but ive not had a problem with mine so far.

Have any electricals gone caput in your house in the past, any breakages do kids wreck the place??????? you know where im coming from rather be safe if anything does happen you have that warranty. But i do know what the guys above are saying which is true also.

My neighbour bought a 42" Plasma Tv from Currys about 9 months later there was a screen burn on her Tv Domestic and General couldn't fix it they gave her a new 50" instead because they couldn't get a 42" and she got to keep her old one.

Most electrical/electronic breakdowns (other than accident damage), follow a "bell curve" ( a "U" shape).

Some devices will fail within seconds of powering on for the first time, some a few minutes, hours, days and weeks; but after about 3 months the number of failures drops off dramatically, and then 99.99% (or higher), of the remaining devices will work flawlessly for the rest of their engineered lives; then the number of failures starts to increase again slowly.

In general electrical terms that means 10 years PLUS - until component wear starts to affect the stability of the circuits; although other factors like thermal shock, screen degradation and reduction of lumin output can make the device fail before the more complex electronics actually fail.

The better electrical circuits actually make allowances for component wear by balancing wear in one part of the circuit with wear in another part - so the output remains the same and the circuit stays stable, so some high quality brands WILL reliably last 20 years or more.

                  (I trained in electronics)

It better to have protection for your plasma even you have warranty. It improves the life of your TV and lessen the chances of any damage.
