for an ipad you will need to get a myfi unit.

Ok mate but if you have a phone with an unlimited data package which is not unusual nowadays, most phones offer the capability to be used as a hotspot. You could connect to the wifi on your phone with the iPad.

but the charges are different when abroad on my giff gaf it would cost far to much

Ah right I see, didn't realise you were going abroad with it mate. Most hotels and bars have free wifi mate so should not really be an issue.
