How do i know my box is working? :S

Hi everyone

I've today received my first ever box - Eurovox 7000.
Should i be able to find channels without updateing firmware?
If not, that's fine, i think i know what to do. I'm just reluctant to install it until i know it's working properly.

I'm reasonably confident i've hooked it up properly thanks to all the great threads here
