It's been a while since I worked with nokia software. But they usually have system memory & storage memory. If the factory reset didn't work it's possible the messages are held in the storage memory.
If the option to format isn't there you're gonna have to read up on flashing a nokia. There used to be software available to do this..but it's been a while. Next time I'm on my desktop I'll check if I've still got them, unless Jim beats me to it.

Just found a setup program called Phoenix_2010.8
Think this is for either flashing nokias or changing the product code. Any idea as I'm to f'ing lazy to instal it to find out
If you Google 'Phoenix nokia software' you should be able to find a link to the latest version.
You might also want to download Navifirm to download the flash files you will need. Here's a walkthrough, and here's another link & install details for Phoenix
If you want to change the product code so you can flash a different area version of the firmware, you'll need NSS (Nemesis Service Suite). Here's yet another link with a walkthrough and download link.
Make sure you follow all instructions otherwise things could go tits-up.
