    which drive to flash

    Hi there

I have just bought an XBOX 360 with the RROD which I am looking to bring back to life very shortly. Once I have done that I am looking to flash the drive, which is a toshiba samsung m25. I also have an xbox 360 which has been flashed with the wrong key so it only plays DVD's and that has a hitachi 047 drive.

My question is which is the easiest one to flash and can I interchange the drives. I have been reading the 2008 text book and the methods seem easier than jungle flasher which I don't understand well.

    Thanks

The hitachi drives are a pain at times, the samsung drives aint that hard at all, just a little common sense is needed

Also yes you can interchange the drives but you need to 'spoof' the drives. I recently bricked an old hitachi 46 and 'spoofed' a samsung as its replacement using jungleflasher.

Ok thanks, I am going to attempt to use jungle flasher to flash the samsung dvd rom. I really don't want to make the same mistake as a frined of my did, which is when it lost his origianl key and flashed it incorrectly.

From what I gather as long as I have the orignal key for the drive I am ok. Is the key in the form of like a microsft windows key or is it a file that I have to save.

Another silly question is once I have flashed the drive, I need to see if I have been sucessful. Can I just do a stright forward copy of an origianl game using Image burn and test it on that?

      Thanks.

To obtain the key under jungleflasher, you will need to put the drive in the 'vendor mode' with status 0x70 (basically once you have clicked the samsung unlock)

This should give you your key under the firmware tab.

I have a guide for jungleflasher if your interested

As for games its not just a straight copy, download them then run them through abgx then burn them to a dvd+r dl (i recommend verbs)

I am having trouble connecting my Toshiba drive to my PC. WHen I connect it to my PC I can see it in the bios however when it goes to booting up, windows will not load.

Do I need a VIA SATA port to over come this problem?

              Thanks.

Try powering the xbox after windows has booted and just before you launch jungleflasher

When that happens I normally just press Eject on the drive and windows will continue loading.

                    Thanks guys

Tried both your techniques but no joy, when I pressed eject the drive just opened but it would not progress the the windows screen.

I have disconnect the power supply from the two internal IDE dvd drives so there is no conflict.

I messed around with a hitachi drive 047 that I was given before I got a working xbox 360. Can I use the slax cd method on the toshiba samsung drive, I know it does not need unlocking. With this method I managed to see the hitachi drive in windows.

Do you actually know that it was flashed with the wrong key or did you acquire it in that state? The reason I ask is if you just got it like that is it could just be the laser that has gone. I bought one on ebay that would read games as DVDs and would also play DVDs. I tweaked the pot on the laser and it's been going for 6 months.

I did aquire it in that state and first thought that it was the lens so I ordered a new one, replaced it but this did not cure the problem.

I checked with this forum and the put me straight about it being flashed with the wrong key hence a pancy looking DVD player.

                        Thanks.

In that case, if you've already replaced the laser I'd agree with you that it's a now just a noisy DVD player.

I am stuck at the point where I cannot connect my Samsung drive to my PC, or my pc will not recognise it.

I have reformatted the my whole PC and reinstalled WIndows to see if that solves the problem but it has not.

The Pc can see the drive in the bios but will not see it in WIndows for some reason. I tried to install windows via the samsung drive which it started to read it and then crashed out.

Not sure what to do now?

                              Thanks.
