Is it worth getting a satellite receiver box?

    Hi,

I have recently looked into getting a box, specifically the f5. However, I have read that Sly are doing things to stop them from working. Would you guys say its worth it to get a box setup or wait and see what happens?

whatever happens with sly the fact is that there is more to the satellite hobby than just the one broadcaster
obviously if things go as predicted then you may not get that option apart from the fta channels on 28 east
if you bought a vu box or similar you can investigate the plugins (apps) that allow internet streaming and movie and mp3 playback etc too

if all you are interested in is that single broadcaster then it may be sit and wait time

I think you will find that shady and myself both mentioned that there is more than the one broadcaster, meaning more satellites and broadcasters up there
you dont have to go the motorised route to get more than one satellite either. you can piggy back an lnb off 28e and get 39e or use a 4 lnb rack

The Problem is that people need educating to the fact that yes there are other providers that show Sports and Movies some for free and some Not. while most people see a Motorised system as a little too technical or maybe it's that SWMBO may not like the idea of an 80cm or even a 1m stuck anywhere on the house.

the real point i am trying to make is that a large percentage of the members in the Openbox/Skybox forum are stuck with how they see a fixed 43cm $ly dish and thats all it is good for well as most know its not its quite a nice little dish for stronger satellites in the sky like 19.2? east 13? some more on the east side and even 30? west OK you might not get all transponders and channels but there is a large selection available that people will get if they just turn the dish and skew the LNB a little and a whole new world opens as well as keeping the Mrs happy.

Deep down i still say a Motorised or even Multi LNB is the way to go but dont write off that little black mesh beauty you have on the side of the wall when 28.2? east does go the way of the Dodo.

            Regards

Is it possible to get test match cricket on any other satellite or are you restricted to sly?

I understand that there are other broadcasters available but will they be in English?

In a Word Yes most european broadcasters also transmit the original audio for a programme as well as one in there native language, there are plenty of free english language speaking channels available covering movies to sports to music to general entertainment.

Visit Here: KingOfSat - European Satellite Zapping & Directory click on any satellite in the top left corner and it will give you a breakdown of what is transmitted and what language

But does any of these satellite s broadcast the cricket? It's not a popular sport in Europe and I don't know if anyone but sly broadcast s test match cricket. Can anyone let me know.

                      Thanks for the replies.

So would you say it's still worth setting one up? Only problem is I don't yet own a box or satellite dish because we got rid of it when we got rid of Sly. So I don't know whether its cost wise to set up if its only going to last a few weeks.

you definitely should not be basing your purchases on if this "hack" is only going to last a few weeks or not

if its something you wish to pursue and be happy with what you get from wherever you get it then go ahead, but if its just for "cheap tv" only on s*y then forget it, its not a reliable method of reducing your sly bills if that is what you think so dont buy anything based on economising
