Bought a Dreambox 500s today but need a little help please?

    Hi all,

I started off with a Skybox F3 but today, following from feedback from users, bought a Dreambox 500s. I connected the box to the TV and am trying to configure it for my use but am a little stuck.

I am actually quite IT savvy so should not really be a problem making use of it.

Can anyone please advise how I can connect this to my Sky satellite dish and start watching some channels as well as how to upload some cccam files.

    Regards John.

Download Universal Dreamup and then get Paphos Al's Commando image 14.7... Use dreamup to put the image on your box and I reckon you'll be fairly impressed!

        Thanks Parkhall,

I just downloaded that software but for some unknown reason cannot connect. Although also downloaded Dreambox control centre and can connect via that.

Regarding installing PaphosAL image, although I have read most of the post on that thread, there does not appear to be a manual on how to install it. Does this overwrite the gemini that came with the box ?

When you use universal dreamup you're best to use a null modem cable, links the box directly using the 9 pin serial port... The drawback to this is that not all computers have the serial port, mostly has to be quite an old computer... I've used DCC network before to flash boxes but they never seem to bring across all the necessary files, null modem seems to be the only way to do it correctly...

If you use Dreamup it will do a complete flash erase for you wiping the box and adding the new image... All in it takes about 12mins using the null modem cable...

Let me know if you get all of the stuff you need and I can give you the basic direction to do the flash...

Ok lets dispel this 'Old' computer Myth again yes i do agree that if using a laptop that is fairly new then it is highly doubtful that it has the required 9 pin serial port on board, but if you have a tower unit especially a home built one then the serial port is there on the Motherboard itself and adaptors are available from ebay for around ?4. I only built one a couple of weeks ago with a Gygabyte motherboard that was a basic one and that had the Com Port adaptor on board, so the Old computer only applies to laptops and not tower based units

Maybe a little bit of a bee in your bonnet there digicon??!!

Its funny that in order to get a serial port in a tower computer, you now have to build it yourself... Serial ports are used less and less as they are a slow data transfer so to say we find them mostly in older computers was probably a fair comment and not so much a 'myth' to be dispelled?

Just working from the point of view that if you walk into a standard computer shop nowadays and try to buy a bog standard computer, most don't have serial ports any more...

Just to dispel one inaccuracy in this thread, please. Commando 14.7 is not by "PaphosAL", it is by ALL us devs over on UkCvs, mainly LraiZer, Renwich, SatSearching, and me (the tea boy) and others (they know who they are, thanks), collectively over the past couple of years...

And to add my twopence halfpenny opinion to the lack of a genuine RS232 9 Pin Serial Port with it's own hardware IRQ on all modern laptops- surely these still have a PCMCIA card slot adaptor I/F? So you can get a PCMCIA /RS232 9 Pin card for less than a fiver on fleaBay (inc free P&P) and be cooking on gas in no time for DreamUP, yes?

                Cheers- AL
