help with opening ebooks have not got a clue how it works kindle one

just fairly new to computing tried to download ebook but computer says cant open this file any help much needed thanks

What format is the book file in, and what kind if book reader do you want to put it on?.

You need to install an ebook reader program. There are quite a few you can get for free, such as Calibre or Mobipocket

I think you're all looking in thew wrong direction.

If you downloaded the book from DK, then you need to unpack it first. Right click on the download & select unpack here, or whatever else shows up.

You then need to copy the .mobi file into the documents folder on your kindle. Or you can email it to to your kindle.

In the settings menu on the kindle you should find the kindle email address that's been setup. You will then need to go to Amazon's website & look for 'Manage my Kindle' in the account settings. At some point you will have to sign in to amazon.
At the bottom of the 'Manage my kindle' menu you should be able to add accepted email addresses. Just add your email address you will be using to email the books to your kindle.
Once done you can transfer books via that email address. To recieve them on your kindle just turn off the airplane mode & setup the wifi connection if you haven't don it yet. Books will automatically be downloaded.

The Kindle will only accept .mobi & pdf formats.
