Ideas on descrambled Sat receiver for use in USA?

I have a friend who live out in the country on a ranch and no hope of any media other then Satellite . Descrambled receivers where available from country's outside the USA , is that still a possibility or just a bad idea? Any comments on this would be very helpful. TIA

you would be better off finding a usa based forum that caters for your own geographical area (this site is dot co dot uk, not dot com)
this forum tends to cater for european hobbyists and not the americas

I would also think that in the usa you would be limited to satellites beaming into your country or the caribbean, chances are that the encryptions are quite strong stopping you from descrambling your satellite signals, especially due to the court cases taken out against the hackers over recent years over there

so probably a bad idea unless he subscribes

there are iks providers in the states but as @ramjet says you would be better off looking on a usa/canadian forum for advice on which stb to go for. these recievers need a lan connection aswell as a satellite feed to function. google dish network/bev iks ect and read, read and read some more, regards mdt

Thanks for the input, I tried the "Thanks" button but it wouldn't work for me.
