    Sat-nav systems 'potentially dangerous'

Satellite-navigation systems could be dangerous, scientists have claimed.

Fears that sat-nav devices may pose a risk to motorists follow research which showed that 78 per cent of crashes were caused by driver inattention.
Now psychologists at Lancaster University and Royal Holloway, University of London are to examine what they described as the "potentially dangerous effects of 'SAT NAV' in-car navigation systems."

The use of a hand-held mobile phone while driving is illegal in Britain and many other parts of the world, now researchers want to examine the impact of other sources of distraction including sat-nav systems which have become increasingly popular in recent years.
In the study, researchers will analyse how drivers handle the information they receive from sat-nav systems and how they respond to it.
Rather than actually driving a car, the volunteers will be set tasks by a computer which mimics the instructions sent by a sat-nav system.
"If we see any worsening of attention or memory performance while people are carrying out the navigation task, this might indicate that the navigation system imposes demands on the participant which could be dangerously distracting", said Polly Dalton, one of the researchers involved in the project.
"By the end of these experiments, we will be able to provide clear measurements of the ways in which the use of in-car navigation systems might interfere with attention and memory performance."
It is estimate that around 14 million drivers now use satellite navigation systems and in 2008 a poll of 2,000 motorists showed that one in five had made them hesitate on a busy road.
According to the same survey, carried out by Direct Line insurance, one driver in 50 said sat-nav had either caused or nearly caused an accident.
Sat-nav systems have also been held responsible for drivers suddenly swerving or turning.
However a spokesman for Tomtom, one of the market leaders in sat -nav devices, denied the technology was distracting drivers.
"We have had two pieces of independent research which show that satellite navigation aids driving behaviour.
"The evidence is that people feel more in control, concentrate on the business of driving and are less stressed."

      Its the same auld shite.

Take those old Magellan and Garmins, for mountaineering.
Plenty of idiots bought into those to their own detriment.

People figured that because they told you where you where and where to go you could forgoe any actual navigation, like plotting a route on a map, figuring out how to get a bearing from using natural phenomena like stars, moss, sunlight and compasses. Never mind the need to actualy learn to accurately guage conditions like weather and terrain.

The same thing that happened to mountaineering back in the early 90s is happening to motorists today, people seem to think that some gadget overrides the need to actualy read roadsigns and learn to navigate without the need to rely on some tool.

Motorists who rely on a tool to do the driving for them will wind up in exactly the same place as those freezing stranded mountaineers in the 90s, the only difference is that a group of idiot mountaineers with no place on the hills wound up killing themselves.
Idiot motorists on the other hand wind up taking out other people with them.

This isnt to suggest that gps and sat nav is without merrit.
Ive been in situations where its been too foggy to get a bearing from anything other than a compass, and ive been in situations where due to the rock type (gabbro for instance) makes a compass unreliable due to the magnetic field it presents from its ferrous content.
Ive been in suituations where without sat nav id be effectively stranded on a ridge with no safe way to get off.

People merely need to start learning to use these things for what they are, tools to AID and AUGMENT navigation and driving, not devices to do the actual work for you.

Nipped out in the car , one Christmas morning , 3 years or so back , to be confronted with a woman staring into a sat nav screen , whilst she drifted into my lane ! .
It was only after a good 5 sec blurt of the horn , did she look at the impending disaster and just avoid it .
Sat navs can be more of a liability than help and how the hell do women drivers qualify for cheaper insurance !!!

Had the loan of my Mates tom tom one XL , when i took my touring caravan to Longnor caravan site in the Deryshire Peaks .
Keyed in the postcode and off i toddled , when i got into the peaks , i ignored it's advice to go down "cart tracks" , but in desperation and after adding 11 miles to my journey , took it's advice .
I ended up in a farm yard , after threading the 7ft 2in wide van x 24ft long , down a 7ft wide lane , as it narrowed , ending up having to squeeze it between 2 huge 7ft 3in wide stone pillars .
When i eventually found the site , the owner put me wise !
Never use them things round here he said ! , as when you key in his postcode , it covers 3 square miles , which a sat nav will always take you to the centre of , this happens to be the farmyard , i and many other unfortunate sat navs user's have visited .
          Good eh !

I hired a Citroen C6 with the HUD (head up display), quite brilliant really, the speed was there all the time, but the arrow which way to turn only came up when needed, and was never a distraction. Tomtoms have a safety feature in them, unfortunately not set by default, where above a certain speed they can't be fiddled with. I believe its the fiddling with while driving that is the dangerous thing. Once a route is set, it is certainly more relaxing to drive, and safer knowing you have to turn left in 300 metres then cutting across two lanes on the junction coz you have just seen the signpost.
When I first got my new tomtom 'toy'. I nearly totalled my car and caravan fiddling with it while driving. Well, I spilled my beer on the crossword I was doing, and the bugger I was on the phone to wondered what the hell was happening.
