    DM500 Dreamup not resonding

After i had totally killed my DM500 using the TELNET i was advised to recover using dreamup and Null cable. I have bought the NUll cable and a USB adapter and when i connect to DM500 i get a message in Log Box saying:
"box type 500", however i do not get the second message which states the box is alive? Can anyone advise? Is my box working? How long do i have to wait after i press connect on Dreamup before teh second message appears.
    Please help.

It takes roughly 10 seconds for Dreamup to upload the bootloader to the dreambox and then the 2nd message appears.

Try using a different version of Dreamup.

      Hi
Have you downloaded or read the guide in the Downloads/Dreambox/Guides/Noobs guide to 500.?

If so its most likely the Usb to Com adaptor they can be a right pain, suggest trying direct connection with a null modem cable from a PC with a 9 pin com port.
UPDATE : You beat me Devilfish

You could try searching the Dream manufacturers website or google it. I have about 4 different versions on my home PC but I'm not home just now. I just googled it when I wanted to try them out and found them on various sites.

                  Maybe the box is unrepairable?

Do you have another dreambox that you can test your setup with, i.e. flash an image using dreamup and the null modem cable to see if it will work? Then you can eliminate the setup as the fault if it works with another dreambox. Does a mate hae one that you could borrow for a bit. Remember to backup the image first.

Dreamup knows that it's a dm500 so that tends to suggest that the connection is working ok because it's the dreambox that sends that signal to Dreamup.

Or...take the top cover off and reseat the ribbon cable attached to the com port on the back. It just slots over 8 pins on the main board, pop it off and back on and see if that helps.

Sounds like the cable to me then.

Follow this guide and make sure your adapter is set for com1.

Or take your dreambox to a PC which has a com port and use a normal null modem cable.

To save a lot of pissing about your best bet is to get it hooked on a pc with a dedicated serial port.
Checkout the RED stickies massive amount of info and effort been put into them.

Yes. You were right. Connected at a friends PC with serial port and started working (flashing) immediately. I have uploaded the DK image and my next learning is how to back up images etc. Thanks for all your help, this forum has taught me a lot!!!!
