GUIDE: Cables Required for Flashing a Eurovox

This guide has been submitted with thanks to its author HiTeck, I have changed/added to it with his permission. So all credit and thanks to him.

These are the cables you will need to flash your box with the latest Firmware.

If you have a PC/Laptop with a 9 pin serial socket then all you need is a Null Modem Cable, see pic below:

If you have a PC/Laptop that doesn't have the 9 pin serial socket you will need a Null Modem Cable and a USB adapter, See pic below:

Make sure you do not buy just a straight through Serial RS232 9-Pin Female to Female cable, they seems to be quite a few people buying these from maplins, and they look exactly the same. However a Null Modem Cable is a cross over serial cable.

    Maplins order numbers are,

    L71BT Correct order code,
L68BT <-- This cable will not work!

Of course these cables can be bought much cheaper from fleabay, these are just for reference.

You will need to install the Driver that came along with the USB adaptor above, If you dont have the Driver you can download it HERE

    Note:

Some people experience difficulties with the USB adapter, most of the time it is purely a port assignment problem. To rectify this make sure you have downloaded your driver and follow below to assign a port:

To see which port your USB adapter is connected to, connect your USB adapter and follow the following instructions:

    1. Go to the Start Menu
    2. Right click on "My Computer"
    3. Select "Properties"
    4. Click on the "Hardware" tab
    5. Click on "Device Manager"
    6. Click the + sign next to "Ports (COM & LPT)"
    7. One of the listed ports should indicate which port your USB adapter is connected to (e.g. COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.)
    8. Go back to loader, (UFL, dnupman, voxer) and make sure it is looking at the correct port.
    9. You should be able to transfer data once the correct port is selected

Follow my advice to step 7. Locate your USB Adapter (port *)

Right click on that port and select properties. Then select port settings, then select advanced. At the bottom of that tab will be a drop down box with the port selected (port * in your case). Use the drop down to select another port (eg 1, 2 or 3). If the port you want to use is already allocated to something else, you can use the same procedure to reassign that port after you have finished.

Save the selections in the usual way. The USB converter will be permanently assigned to the port you selected.

This is based on Windows XP. Vista differs slightly in regards to device manager but the principle remains the same once you have a compatible device driver.

And if you are still having problems with the USB adapter then its time to get a serial PCI card.

Or a PCMCIA to RS232 serial I/O Card

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams

    Null modem lead

Try to avoid Maplin they are well expensive. Online is cheaper by far if you don't mind the wait.

hi all i bought a cable from maplin for 15 quid reduced from 20 it looks like the right one usb to 9 pin serial but it has male pins instead of female so obviously it doesnt work as it wont fit into the back of the decoder box, just letting everyone know in case yous all make the same mistake as me.

Hi, There may be a bit of confusion. Your 'female' connection may be an external monitor and the male and female lead is an extension. A com port is male, the 'D' Type connection (especially if it is blue) is for an external monitor. Hope this helps.

                      Cable pinout

The exact pin out for the recommended cable is here :-
                      RS232 serial cable pinout information
and is the one marked "RS232 null modem with full handshaking"
This definitely works ! The 9 pin plugs are FEMALE !

                        Cable problem ? read this

IF your laptop has a female serial port socket it is a very strange laptop indeed ? Are you sure that you are not looking at the VGA connector?
(3 rows of pins, same size block ?)

The pinout and genders of the cable required can be found on one of my other posts (#16 on this thread) it 100% works !

I would suggest for most applications that you acquire a PCMCIA - serial card as I have found that IF you have an older laptop with slower USB1.1 ports then more often than not the USB-Serial convertor drivers will not install.
EVEN when they say they are backward compatible ! You need USB2.
