Default iPhone 5 stuck in recovery mode

    Hi folks,

We connected my wifes iphone 5 to her laptop to transfer some pictures/videos and remove some music as she was running out of space.
iTunes said there was an update available so we accepted and it done it's thing. Then it came up saying it was in recovery mode and that we had to restore it to get it working again.

Now, I don't want to restore it because I'm assuming we'd loose everything.

I've seen a few threads saying to download redsn0w and use the recovery fix but its not working. Tried to do the DFU mode thingy with the sequence of power and home keys but it does a few plink plonks on the lappy (technical term ) and does nothing.

When I power the phone on, it shows a usb cable and an iTunes logo.

Any ideas please? Am I just not doing it properly?

    Thanks!

The missus thought she noticed it doing a backup before the software upgrade, so I took the plunge and restored it. The backup was indeed there so could restore it ok. Fyew!

Make sure you have iCloud backup switched "on" on the iPhone 5...you will have all the vital information backed up automatically every day to the cloud. No chance of losing stuff.

Hi I had the same problem with my iPhone 5 couldn't for the life of me get into the dfu mode, then after a week of searching read that you should plug into a port that is the nearest to the battery, then try the dfu mode, sounds stupid but it worked for me, have ago nothing to loose by trying

FYI - if you had a 16GB iPhone set up to backup to iCloud you don't need 16GB of storage space.... Backed up data is vastly compressed. Also it's good practice to set up Photo stream on iPhone, backing up all photos to your computer via wifi(when connected) This way you never lose any essential photos.

Glad to hear you got it sorted devilfish. If your Idevices are not jailbroken its very good practice to plug them into iTunes and sync a backup onto your computer at least once a month. Also if you're not jailbroken, keep the iOS up to date and accept any updates.

The iCloud backup doesn't backup the information that has been synched on to it from a PC as it assumes it can restore that from iTunes at a later date - once you've taken the music, TV, movies, podcasts, etc. the backup size is significantly lower - I've got two iPhones and two iPads backing up to iCloud and I am using just over 2Gb.

Try the RecoveryTool following steps if your iPhone stuck in recovery mode:
    Enter DFU mode:
Plug your device into your computer
Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping it off
Hold the power button for 3 seconds
Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds
Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.
About unlocking the iPhone 5, you do not need to connect it to the itunes(iOS 6 or later) , as long as your unlock request has been added to Apple's whitelist, you can unlock the iPhone by inserting a non-EE brand sim card. Click here for more about unlocking an iPhone

Connect to iTunes see if it offers to recover the device.
If not try to get it into dfu mode( see YouTube) whilst connected to iTunes.
