Default Repair XPROG-M with $2.70 USBasp programmer

This guide is intended for those who don't already have a second XPROG-M, UPA USB, or other programmer capable of programming the XPROG's ATmega64 and need to repair their XPROG-M after attempting to update or if the flash counter has reached its limit, etc.

USBasp programmers are the cheapest programmers I've found capable of programming the XPROG's ATmega64. They can be found on eBay for as little as $2.70usd shipped from China, and only about twice that shipped from elsewhere, likely less than you can build a programmer for. (Search eBay for "USBasp.")

The .PDF guide as well as freeware programming software and repair files are included in the attached archive.

Note that this repair is for XPROG-M v5.0. There are guides here on how to upgrade to v5.4.8.

All the questions should start from what car, what year, what engine is what fuel. What are the symptoms of the problem. Only then is what you know, what fault code, live data, what you have done.

Glad it worked for you. Have you done the modification to avoid verify errors on HC05/HC705 by adding a 100k ohm resistor as per this post: http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...ml#post1112942? I should have mentioned this in the op.

I actually already had two programmers capable of programming the XPROG's ATmega64, an ATMEL AVRisp MKII and an AVR Dragon, but saw this cheap programmer and thought I'd give it a try and share with others if it worked. What I like about this programmer besides its low price is that it doesn't require external power to the XPROG-M. I know it's not a big deal but with this programmer you just click a single button to Write All and with other programmers you have to erase chip, write eeprom, then write flash, in that order or get verify errors. Although the error is real, it does not matter. This is because if external power is supplied, it will reset the counter to 00D0 but the eeprom file has FFFF at this location (offset 0081). (The file could be modified to have 00D0 at offset 0081 to avoid this verify error.) Just to set things straight, with the supplied flash file (also available elsewhere on this site) the counter actually counts down. The first time powered up after programming, the XPROG will reset the counter to 00D0 (208 decimal), and with each read or write decrements the counter by 2; however, once the counter reaches 0000 it ignores it and the counter stays at 0000.

I don't have a carprog but I don't think this programmer will work. You might want to check out this thread: carprog reprogramming by h-tag
