Dimmer switch ..

Grumbles is in the bad books.The stoves in and was looking lovely with the two 50watt halogen bulbs shining down on it but the dimmer switch will not turn the lights off totally,there is just a slight glow left in the bulbs.The lights are fed from the lighting circuit and the switch is a standard I gang 1 way 60-250 w.The lights are mains dimmable halogen gu10.Ive looked up leading edge and trailing edge switches until ive confused myself beyond repair,any pointers would be appreciated as mrs grumbles has placed an embargo on single malt until repaired.....

Hello mate, have you checked the rating of the dimmer as they work on a resistor principle.

1) dimmer just has two wires connected
2) remove one wire check the lights do go out
3) tea dusters, triads, thrusters (iOS failure)
Have slight leakage due to needed impurity s

4) if possable try another dimmer, THINK there's dimmers which are OFFF. Tgen min-max

You would want to use leading edge dimmer with your mains dimmable gu10 bulb or if you used LED use trailing edge dimmer usually more expensive as well. So you say you have two lights fed from one switch. Anything else connected? And you did push dimmer switch in to switch off? Anymore info would help.

ha,of course mt,meats on about the triac inside the switch although I must admit the tea dusters and the thrusters part got me a bit worried,i think our meaty might have had another window open....

N dougalmcd,theres nothing else connected to it,it is a cable off the downstairs lighting ring that used to feed the front door bell,and the switch was just a turn till it clicks on or off not a push in type,it was only a real cheap wickes one.When you say a leading edge one is that because the bulbs need a bit of a kickstart? Just for educational or enterinmaent purposes, try a bigger bulb, say 500w see if the load is not enough.

have close look at board see if any pig piss tracking across

Did you try and put old switch back on and check for 0 volts at bulb end when switched off with meter?

Orginal poster got more than 600 posts so is entitled to leave a live bare wire for 5 mins to test

thanks for the help lads,a mate turned up this morning with a varilight leading edge switch and it works no probs ,that saves me from turning myself into a beefy crisp....cheers
