Best to uninstall the usb drivers in device manager and reboot.

Yeah seems to be a common issue, depending on where the pc sits........ since the usb port is open, the contacts are open to the air and they can get a film, or just go off the connection points...oxidize perhaps...but no longer readable.
How to fix...not sure, try a cotton ear swab... rub Inside the port...(light rubbing alcohol or such) the external connection is bad, not the port normally

Hi scotty, Lately I've been having the same problem with one stick and am sure it is wear on the part of the stick.
Bought on of those usb adapters, not expensive...maybe a few pounds, and the stick works perfectly because the usb cable is a tight fit with the computer because it's new and the stick likewise, is tight in its new port.

Do other devices work if plugged into the usb port you are having an issue with? e.g. keyboard, mouse etc...

Try all drivers relating to the usb port using USBDview
