AFAIK you need an original licence from VW.

You can use passthru also no need for Vas head

You can use mongoose vw Audi dongle if you don't want wireless but it's $500 plus cost of license to go online

Audi and vw currently have a free licensing program for technicians that allows them to install odis on personal laptops and a free license for 6 months.However this is limited to technicians only and is not valid for warranty related work.Personally I rarely ever use odis.Unless I need to do an update,deactivate component protection and keys I reach for my Ross-Tech VCDS Hexnet interface.Much quicker to do anything.

I am thinking in buying this one:

However, I am divided between the CLONE VAS/ODIS 2.2.7 and the ORIGINAL VCDS.

Both have advantages and disadvantages:
VCDS: higher price, easy updates for life, official support, less functionalities
VAS/ODIS: lower price, updates more difficult, no official support, more functionalities
