Default BMW MSD80 cloning experience sharing

    Hi DKers,

I just want to share my experience on MSD80 hopefully others find it useful. Last week i tried to replace with a used MSD80 (not 80.1 nor 80.2, is exactly MSD80) ECU with FGTech Galletto and found that there are many OTP areas. I modified the dump file so it bypass the OTP areas and write whatever is writable onto donor ECU. And then car starts successfully with no problem with donor ECU.

There is another method i heard of which is extract donor DME ISN and write into CAS, but i don't have the tools (BMW explorer, AutoHex, BMW Multi tool..) hence i tried the method above and it works. I am not sure under what condition method above will not work, maybe you can share your comments if any.

    Thanks.

I think it was a lucky case. I do not think you can clone a Tricore with OTP sector without an appropriate tool to modify software or to read SK / ISN.
    Good luck.

Autohex II -> using tricore boot mode: you can clone it, but why you need to clone it?
You need only changing ISN to let it works like a charm. This can be done by OBD

Sorry for hijacking this thread, I haven't got a cloning experience to share but I do need to clone an MSD80 DME for my 335. If anyone can help provide me the info for doing that i'll happily share the experience here.

If car is close that is one option.

But many people live far from locksmiths and prefer to send ECU only for cloning instead of paying for towing couple thousands to get vehicle to shop.
Guided fault finding = Feature that many factory scan-tools have and real technician despise it.

Get the original and donor DMEs from your customer.
Read ISN from original by obd on bench.
Write this ISN in the donor ( obd + tricore)
    Send it back to customer.

to connect on a bench you need:
on a bigger connector pin 28 canH pin 44 canL resistor 120 Ohm between wires,
smaller connector large pin 1 +, small pin 1 +, large pin 4 negative.
also dme could be in a sleep and to wake it up you may need some other modules connected to can network, some diagnostic tools are capable to wake up BMW modules by themselves by injecting wake up packets, in that case no need for other modules connected.
to read in boot mode will be different.

What other modules needed to wake it up so that I get it from vehicle?

With all due respect, let me correct whats written here.

if you are doing thru OBD2 you only need JBBF or KGM and CAS with working key, keyslot and start/stop button for ignition.
just giving +12 as in picture will be enough to wake it up.

This is connection diagram, no need for big connector:

Anyways, im not sure AVDI can clone it. it may be able to read ISN tho.
lmk if you'll need help, I do these every day.
