I use dell e6220. i5 processor with 4gb ram. 12.5" but it has really good resolution so everything is more clear than on my old 15.6" laptop. Dell e series have expansion port on the bottom so you can add extra ports to laptop very easly (COM, LPT etc...)
Dell d630 is a good cheap laptop.
- very easy change hdd. It has support with ssd (samsung 830)
- it has a serial port. Some jobs require rs232 port and many converters from usb to rs232 dont work fine.
- it is a "hard"laptop.
- you can find many second hands parts easy or batteries
- it support winxp and win7
- you can upgrade with 4GB ram
- you can see level battery without turn on the laptop. Only push a small button on the battery.

Dell D630 battery life is long.
i use dell d630 . easy to change hard disk
If you can get used, Lenovo T440s with i5/i7 . new cost you a fortune...
I have a few toughbooks but my favourite is my CF19 with 7 pro.
Two hard drives both Partitioned to boot into seperate window 7s. So different scanners can have their own partition and operating system.
My favorite is still Panasonic CF52/CF53. Win7 is still best for work. On Win10 with Xentry you would'nt be able to establish AddHoc Network to the C4 Multiplexer (you can do it with some hacks, but it leaks)
