Default Watch VU box outside network with Netgear VPN?

I'm looking at buying a Netgear Nighthawk X10 router.

It enables the setting up of an Open VPN to use your home network outside the home.

Does this mean it should provide a secure (no open ports etc) way of watching my VU+Duo2 outside the home, using the VU app or the openwebif browser?

No matter what you do you will be opening port 80 or 8080 for webif (Both insecure) yes a vpn will disguise the direct route but why not just make sure smb is disabled and default pass username are changed on vu then open port manually to vu ip and access using whatever hostname you have set fir your dns

Thanks. I'm a newbie when it comes to networking so I'll need to decipher what you've said.

I'm confused as to why you'd need to open a port if you're setting up your own VPN connection on your own router and accessing it using openvpn remotely.
I would have thought that if you're accessing your home network securely there's be no more need to open a webif port than any other.

Webif still uses port 80 regardless of where you watch it from. You may be coming in from outside on another port through your vpn but you will still be using port 80 at some point. Isn't there a vpn plugin on the vu box that will give you more secure access to the outside world. ????

Just had a quick look at dreamdroid android app and that allows secure https with additional login on port 433, why would you need anything else. Unless of course your an international spy and have top secret documents stored on hdd of vu.

Thanks. I really am a beginner with this but keen to learn.

I've created a no-ip account and I now have a .hopt.org address and an IP which I presume to be static.

When I go to my VM router to port forward 443 though, the IP address that it asks for is a 192.168... , rather than my static public IP or my hostname.

I'm now more confused than ever.

Ok assuming vu has internal ip ending 5. On router you would port forward 433 to 192.168.1.5 now access with dreamdroid using your Hopt.org hostname with settings set to https using port 433. You have just assigned port 433 to vu so this should take you direct to vu nowhere else within your home network

I'm getting a 'No route to host' message in Dreamdroid when trying to connect.

I also get this when I portforward 80, too.

Using https you should be port forwarding with external port 433 to internal port 80 to your vu ip. Do not forget to reboot router. It should work.

Still not connecting. Do I need to change a setting in the vu?

I need to leave it now but l'll come back to it in a few days. Thanks for your help so far.

Not sure. It's not something I usually bother with and rebooting a router during the weekend fut championships will end up with very miserable children in my house so not really in a position to test it myself

Okay, I've made progress but I'm not there yet.

I can connect to the box through port 443 but I can't stream on Dreamdroid.

I can't stream on the VU+ andoid player either, through open port 80, so I guess it's a problem at the box.

Do I need to add the hostname on the Vu+ box somewhere (I'm on Vix). I have DUC running okay on my PC, but do I need to align the VU with this set up?

    Cheers.

So are you saying you can connect to webif on port 433 from outside the network. If so everything sounds fine with the box and router. If You are only connecting to the hdd on the box you need to configure your router to use 433 for external access but switching to 80 once inside. In other words external port set to 433, internal set to 80 in your router config.

I can change channel on the box from outside the netowork but can't stream.

443 and 80 ports are both open.

Do I need to do something else with port 80? How do you set an internal port?

(I have the same problem with the VU+ Player by the way, just using port 80.)

If you can change channel but can't stream from webif the issue could be the speed of internet. Try streaming transcoded on sd only. I'm not sure why you can't get dreamdroid or vu player to work
