Hello,
need some advise on what my right are.
Two different sinerios.
Went into a shop and purchased a back pack & a umbrella.
?10.99 for the back pack & ?7.50 for the umbrella.
The guy rings up both item on the till & the full amount is ?18.49.
I gave him a ?20.00 note & he give me my change BUT does not give me a receipt for the payment.
I asked him for the receipt and he says "no, we don't have to give a receipt anymore".
Surely this is a load of B@77@@ks. What happens if I need to return the items or if I need to prove I paid for these items???
I argued with him & then the security guard asked me to leave the shop.
I paid cash for the both item & I don't have a receipt...This can't be right.
Can any shop, business or organisation refuse to take payment in CASH?
If I purchase an item or a service, can they refuse to accept payment by cash and demand that I pay by Card. (I did not want to give my card details to these people)
Surely, its illegal to refuse to accept payment by legal tender???(UK coins & notes)
Any advise before I go back to the shop and say I paid ?5000.00 for these two items, sorry can't show you a receipt cos wose'nt given one and want a refund but I only accept payment in Luncheon Vouchers.

They have to provide a receipt, otherwise how can the sale of goods act be applied? With no receipt you have no ability to return the goods if they prove to be faulty or not fit for purpose? Take it to trading standards and let them deal with it. He's probably not going to be declaring such sales to HMRC.

Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

no reciept =s cash in their back sky rocket, just tell them your going to trading standards, that usually does the trick as they wont want them on their back or poss the tax man like has been mentioned.

I would also tell them that you are self-employed & need the receipts for tax purposes. I know it's not a huge amount, but as a self-employed person, I keep receipts for everything I buy. It all adds up at the end of the tax year.
Why "...but not this!"?
We all know it's a basic right, but the seller still refused to give one. Any other info you can give to persuade the seller to hand over a receipt should be used in those circumstances. If it persuades the seller to hand over a receipt, then great. If it doesn't, then you have nothing to lose.
Though I'd be tempted now to set my phone to record, tell him that it looks like a fiddle and ask him what it's worth not to go to TS and HMRC Even when I'm going a guvvy (which is rare because of my line of work) I *never* ever refuse to give a receipt if asked for one and always declare it on my son's earnings He's self employed and I was in his employ, honest Mr HMRC

I've just checked, there is no lawful obligation whatsoever for the retailer to provide a receipt. Most odd, but is the case. I can only suggest that you no longer use the shop and advise all your friends not to. Although the sale of goods act does cover return of goods without a receipt (you don't need one to return goods) you might find it quite difficult if you attempted to return something with no receipt. Though if he's never handing out any it's still suspect that he's not telling HMRC how much trade he's doing either.
As for your other question, yes they can refuse any payment method they wish to. It's thier loss, but they are allowed to make that choice.

Yep sounds like there pocketing that cash and not declaring the transaction.
At the time you could have always turned around and said 'no receipt, fine give me my money back and keep the items'.
Bit ridiculous of them getting security guards involved etc than providing you with a receipt.
As others have mentioned if you feel you have been done wrong by then contact trading standards and in future just avoid this shop, if that is the sort of customer service they provide then they shouldn't be worthy of your cash in the future.

If it happens again then use a credit or debit card to make the payment. Consumer law states proof of payment must be provided...that can be done using the card!s monthly statement.
